To Tent, or Not to Tent, That Still May Be the Question

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Duke students LOVE basketball! Every Duke student is familiar with the tradition known as tenting. Whether you’ve done it yourself, have walked by K-Ville at some point in January, or have brave friends who have endured the freezing temperatures, tenting cannot be missed. If you can’t decide whether or not to embark on this crazy journey to the Duke/UNC game, here’s a list of pros and cons to help you make the decision:

Pros

  • On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday you don’t have to be back to your tent until 2:30 AM (perfect for going out!)
  • Grace is given if the temperature is less than 20 degrees, there’s more than 2 inches of snow, for Men and Women’s Basketball games, and for one hour after each tent check
  • There are different levels of difficulty. Check out the facts about each level at the end of this article to find out which one is right for you!
  • You’ll get to go to a game that’s FULL of energy and team spirit
  • Painting your body blue will get you singing, “I’m blue da ba dee da ba di” and loving every moment of it!
  • It’s a Duke tradition
  • “I’m on a Boat” will become “I’m in a Tent”
  • You’ll get closer to everyone in your tent
  • Personal Checks! Everyone can go, but you’ll appreciate it sooo much more after you’ve lived in a tent for the past three weeks
  • Another excuse to chant: “Go to hell Carolina, go to hell!”

Cons

  • Wilson and the IM Gym are NOT considered part of K-Ville
  • Sunday-Wednesday you have to be back in your tent by 11PM (So… no Wednesday night Shooters)
  • You will probably miss your bed and get A LOT less sleep
  • Studying for tests can be a bit of a challenge
  • It’s cold!
  • TENT CHECKS
  • You’ll be singing “Rain, rain, go away, come again some other day (when I’m not living in a tent for a month!)”
  • You’ll get a little too close to everyone in your tent

Whether you decide to tent or not to tent, the game is March 3rd at 7pm!

Please note: even if you decide not to tent, watching the game is still pretty much mandatory for all Duke students!

Find out which level is right for you:
