‘Tis the Season for Holiday Cheer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.
It is officially the most wonderful time of the year. Unfortunately, finals can put a bit of a damper on the holiday spirit, but when the “dying” part of studying is hitting hard, remember these four reasons for holiday cheer.

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire
I’m not sure if people actually roast chestnuts, but there is another way to stay warm and satisfy your hunger during the coldest months. Whether it’s in a festive (though apparently controversial) holiday-edition cup at Starbucks, or at home in the mug you decorated when you were five, hot chocolate is a winter must. Add some whipped cream and marshmallows, and sip your cocoa in front of the fireplace (roasting chestnuts: optional).

Jack Frost Nipping at Your Nose
Snow may not be everyone’s favorite, but look at this picture of a puppy playing in the snow and then try to hate on it.
That whole cold factor might be a turn off, but sledding, building snow forts, and snowball fights are definitely worth it. And couldn’t we all use a snowman like Olaf in our lives?

Yuletide Carols Being Song by a Choir
You know Silent Night and Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, you know the Twelve Days of Christmas and Winter Wonderland, but do you recall, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer? As a famous elf once said, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!” There are so many fantastic holiday songs, from the classic carols and their Josh Groban covers to the poppy tunes of Mariah Carey and yes, even Justin Bieber.

And Folks Dressed Up Like Eskimos
Dressing for the cold can be a bear, but other seasons have tough time comparing to the options of fuzzy socks, cute hats, warm scarves, and of course, ugly Christmas sweaters. Whether you’re finding a fancy dress for a holiday party, or trying to find the tackiest sweater to complement your reindeer antler headband, winter brings plenty of excitement and choice to your fashion choices.
