When You Just Need Some Greasy, Unhealthy Comfort food

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

With all the articles on healthy eating choices out there, you’ve got tofu and whole wheat coming out the wazoo. But what about when you’ve just had a bad day or when you need to take a break from that bland diet you’ve been on? Sometimes you just need a sloppy burger or some greasy fries. Here’s my list of the top 4 places to pig out. Just be careful of the imminent heart attack if you start making these places your regular eating spots.

4.   Lilly’s Pizza

A little bit of a drive to Raleigh but well worth it. Lilly’s Pizza features award winning handmade pizzas and calzones in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Choose from over 70 toppings! They’ve got specials every day so check out their website before you head over. Don’t worry; they’ll be opening a branch in Durham soon.

3.   Chubby’s Tacos

We’ve all frequented Cosmic Cantina, but another lesser-known Mexican restaurant right down the street is also worth trying. Chubby’s Tacos was named one of the best restaurants in the Triangle by Indy magazine and a “2010 Favorite Restaurant Value” by the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau. They’ve got tacos, burritos, and all your Mexican favorites. What more could you want?

2.   Elmo’s Diner

A fun classic diner on 9th Street (that many of you have probably already heard of). They’ve got malts, grilled cheese, meatloaf … all of your favorite Mommy-made classics. They also serve breakfast all day in a comfy, relaxed environment that is perfect for those Sunday mornings when you’re too hung over to put on anything but sweatpants and the t-shirt you slept in. One thing to keep in mind— this place is so popular that you’ll probably have to wait a while to get in for brunch on the weekends.

1.    Bull City Burger and Brewery

The best burger around. Nothing too fancy, but everything is made in house, including their cheeses and buns. Their burgers are insanely fresh because all their ingredients are locally grown. The mason jars their drinks come in, the décor, and the beer sampler give Bull City Burger an interesting hipster vibe that’s not too pretentious. I would recommend their Bacon and Blue burger with mushrooms. Also, for those of you who are (VERY) adventurous, this month is exotic meat month at BCBB! Kangaroo, crocodile, bison… mmmm.
