Your Dream Come True: Fairy Tales Revamped

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Think you know Snow White? Think again.

The 1937 Disney’s Snow White marked the beginning of a long line of Disney princesses who made mistakes, were accompanied by animal friends, and fell in love. These girls were, almost without fail, saved by young male suitors with animated abs so chiseled, we viewers would just sigh watching them. Snow White was no different, lying in a poison-apple induced slumber until Prince Charming could wake her with true love’s kiss.

Not so with the Snow White recently seen fighting her way through the forest on ABC’s Once Upon a Time. This princess knows her way around the woods, ambushes Prince Charming to execute a royal heist, defeats dangerous trolls, and dishes out banter to the prince himself.

With shows like Grimm and Once Upon a Time, it’s no wonder fairy tales have taken over the networks by storm (or should I say by magic?) Long gone are the days of girls who sit inside a tower and wait for Prince Charming to save them. The newer versions of the tales that rendered us soul-satisfied when we were kids now leave us happy with their adult counterparts. Even Disney is starting to empower their female leads, making the long-haired Rapunzel (debut 2011) save her leading male opposite, Flinn Ryder, more than once from palace guards, a crazy horse, and a tavern full of villainous ruffians.

Now, we collegiettes may be strong, independent, and able to save the day while looking glamorous, but we still do want our own fairy tale ending, after all. Whether that includes scoring our dream job, travelling the world, falling madly in love, or actually saving the day is up for each girl to decide for herself. And, okay, we do secretly want to find our own Prince Charming—one who will know we can take care of ourselves, but will still want to protect and help us believe in true love’s kiss.

To see what modern fairy tale heroine you are most like from ABC’s hit new show, Once Upon A Time, take the following quiz.

What is your late afternoon drink of choice?

a) Apple cider. It’s spicy, lush, and reminds you of the tall arbors around your neighborhood.
b) Cinnamon-topped hot chocolate, with a touch of whip cream. It’s the perfect blend of sweet for any time.
c) A scotch or brandy after a long day of work suits you just fine. They may be men’s liquors, but they wet the whistle and relax you just fine.
d) Sparkling Grape Juice or seltzer. It’s elegant, refined, and just out-of-the-ordinary enough to dazzle dinner guests.
e.) Robust red wine, tart cranberry juice, or anything else that will match your bold red lipstick and sassy conversation.

How do you spend your free time?

a.) Free time? Please. All of my time is spent politicking, manipulating pawns, and using my influence for the greater good. I know what I want and how to get there.
b.) Volunteering. Any time I help to put a smile on someone’s face is time well spent. And I can’t help but enjoy seeing any progress made by patients, sick animals, or things of that sort. The world is a truly beautiful place.
c.) Watching action movies. Just kidding—I’m the one fighting the crime. There’s no reason to sit down and let the world pass me by when I can be out ridding the world of its problems. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.
d.) Unfortunately, I don’t have that much. I work long hours, but I still manage to stay positive. And I know someday all of the toiling will pay off.
e.) Daydreaming. I like to think about all of the places I’d travel to, all of the new experiences I’d like to have under my belt. Staying tied down is overrated.

What kind of guy do you usually fall for?

a.) Fall for? They usually fall for me. One or two of them may occupy my attention for a while, but I’m tough to please. So far, I’ve yet to find someone who can meet my standards.
b.) Anyone with a witty mind and a noble disposition suits me well. I don’t mean a robot who always does the right thing and never makes mistakes, but I do like guys who can be sweet and have a good personal sense of right and wrong.
c.) Someone with the ability to get me to open up. It’s hard to know when to let someone in and put my guard down, but it’s been known to happen when the right one comes along.
d.) Someone who can care for me regardless of any misfortunes that have befallen me. And if he treats me like a princess, it’s a major plus.
e.) I like the adventurous type. Someone who’s not afraid of a little risk. I want to have fun, after all.

What is your version of a happy ending?

a.) Being in a place where I can control my own destiny. Taking fate into my own hands has led me to some difficult sacrifices, but I knew gaining a bit of power had to come at a price.
b.) As long as I do some good in the world and have a family, my life will have been worth living as I did. Being immersed in the positive energy around me is all I can ask for, really.
c.) Finding people I care about and making friends. Even though I am sometimes unsure of how to meet people or navigate social situations, I have proven to be a good friend and family member. I hope to live a life full of lasting friendships and strong relationships.
d.) Living happily ever after with a man I’ve fallen in love with. The biggest luxury life can afford is love, and no amount of magic will ever be able to replicate such a powerful force.
e.) Not too sure, actually. Even though I know what I like, I haven’t thought far enough in the future to see where I will end up. Things become too complicated that way. I’d rather avoid potential disappointments and just see where life takes me.

Mostly A’s: Dark Queen—You are dangerously beautiful. There is an incredible amount of power and drive lurking beneath those dark lashes and strong bravado. Just take care that a thirst for power doesn’t drive away people you care about.

Mostly B’s: Snow White—Even though you are able to defend yourself, you can still live in harmony with the surrounding world. You’ve proven to be a friend of animals, and people appreciate your pure heart and sensitivity. But never stop believing in the good of mankind, no matter how hard it is to make the right choice.

Mostly C’s: Emma Swan—You can look danger in the eye and not shirk away. When you find someone you care about, nothing can make you back down. And even though you have a tougher exterior, you have the ability to come across some truly incredible relationships. Just be sure to be open to making a friend or finding a love. If you never let your guard down, then how will you be able to forge relationships?

Mostly D’s: Cinderella. Life may not have handed you the easiest of circumstances, but you’ve pushed through them and never stopped dreaming of living something better. By not giving up on your dream, you’ve inspired others to pursue theirs. Never give up on your goal, or be afraid of what others say.

Mostly E’s: Ruby. Wearing form-fitting clothes, working bold make-up, and hanging with ‘bad-boys’ don’t scare you. There is little of life you have yet to experience, but sometimes letting loose can be hard on yourself if you take it to the extreme. Every once in a while, be sure to let up on the gas pedal.

I've been a Her Campus contributor for three semesters now, and I love being able to express myself in this way. I am a junior at Duke University. I do yoga, am writing a fantasy novel, love video games, feel passionate about getting collegiettes to find body/mind/self confidence, and am trying (*) to eat gluten-free like my amazing boyfriend. *one of the best things you can do for your health
