Daily Healthy Habits To Get You Through This Year: Zoom University Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duq U chapter.

In the context of a global pandemic and with classes slowly getting to us, our health and habits should be our priority more than ever. And even with classes being remote or part-time remote for a majority of us: YOU are YOUR priority, and it starts with a daily structured routine!

A structured daily routine  can keep someone productive, organized, healthy, and, overall, make them a whole lot  happier! So here are some new habits to add for a balanced routine:

  1. Be an early bird!

It can be a struggle to get out of bed early, but getting up early can be so rewarding and so beneficial.

In fact, studies show that early risers are more optimistic, proactive, and better problem-solvers.

Who likes rushing to class feeling stressed and unprepared because of waking up last minute? Nobody! So, take control of the morning and take the time to relax, and kick off the day right.

    2.  Find time to work out.

We all know the numerous physical benefits of exercising daily, but on top of these, it is great for mental health and emotional well-being.

Working out will improve your mood and give you the energy needed to get work done, so why not even start the day with it? Make it fun! It can just be a ten-minute HIIT! Just get those endorphins kicking in and keep that positive energy for the entire day!

Here are some easy ways to add exercise into your daily routine:

  • Commute by walking or biking

  • Take the stairs as much as possible

  • Make study breaks sweat breaks

  • Find a fun workout on campus or online

  • Start a workout challenge with a friend

    3.  Fuel your body right.

Eating right is important to fuel the body and feel good the entire day.

Between classes, work, stress, and other activities and commitments, you need to eat accordingly:

  • Start with a good breakfast. Get that morning energy and wake up your body to let it know it is time to function

  • Stay hydrated (with water). Between your cute new water bottle and that skin glow, what is your excuse to not drink enough water during the day?

  • Eat healthy snacks. It is easy to go for Doritos and chocolate, so keep your healthy snacks in your bag. You will go for them first this way!

  • Limit junk food. While you can still eat fast food here and there, make sure it does not become a habit (remember: everything in moderation).

  • DO NOT SKIP MEALS. It happens, you have a big test and study all day at the library, so be prepared. Take food you can eat on the go to keep your brain and energy going.

  4.  Add self-care into your day.

We are in college. We are under a lot of stress and have a lot to handle! So, it is important to find your daily time and space to feel safe, happy and healthy. Your mental health should be your priority during these four years.

Lower your stress by taking a walk, listening to your favorite podcast, calling your best friend, or even journaling.

Whether you start your day with some meditation or end your day with a bubble bath and your favorite album, dedicate some YOU time during the day.

   5. Get enough sleep!

It is a well-known fact that college students get little to no sleep most of the time, and that is a real problem. Most people need at least 8 hours of sleep every day.

Sleep improves your creativity, your grades, can lower stress, and can help fight those sweet cravings. So why not sleep more?

(A little tip to get to bed early? Just like in the morning, set an alarm 30 minutes before bedtime, and try to be phone-free before sleeping. I’m telling you that you will feel the difference!)

Being a successful student is not just about having a good GPA (even though that does matter)! It’s about being the best version of yourself possible by learning and growing throughout these four years.

Healthy habits aren’t just beneficial for you now. Rather, these healthy habits are the start of a lifestyle that can be (and should be) sustained for the rest of your life.

So, why not start now!?

Hey I'm Margot! Originally Frenchie, I decided to come to the US and am now a junior studying International Business and Marketing at Duquesne University. While being a D1 student-athlete, I am also the Co-Director for Duquesne's HerCampus chapter. My favorite shows include Friends and Gilmore Girls. You will likely find me working out, jamming to music, or with good food around me (chocolate is my weakness haha). I aspire to be a #Girlboss with a sense of style, and hopefully travel to as many places as possible!
Hey I'm Lauren! I'm a PR & Advertising major at Duquesne University and I am one of the Founding Campus Coordinators! On campus, you'll most likely find me sprinting from place to place because I am rarely on-time for anything (oops!) Off-campus, you'll find me at any and every coffee shop in and around Pittsburgh!
