Borrowed from the Boys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

The androgynous look has already proven to be a big trend for A/W 2014, with boyish clothes seen up and down the runway from the tailored suits at Stella McCartney to the oversized blazers and coats seen at Alexander Wang. Loose fitting, generally more comfortable yet still oozing stylish vibes, masculine clothing seems the obvious choice to wrap up in for the winter months. Here are my top seven choices and how you can work them into your wardrobe.

1. The boyfriend jean. Generally more looser fitting with a lower waist line, the boyfriend jean has been seen recently on style icons such as Rihanna and Alexa Chung. Get a pair with ripped knees for a more fresh and urban take on the style, or team with a pair of stilettos for a stylish evening outfit.

2. The oversized (or boyfriend) shirt. An obvious contender, the boyfriend shirt is a versatile piece that can be styled casually with a pair of shorts or jeans. Or try tucking into a pencil skirt for a sleeker silhouette.

3. Brogues. One of my favourite shoe choices, every girl should have a pair of these in their wardrobe. Super comfy (perfect for Durham’s cobbles), brogues go with most things in your wardrobe, and a good pair will last for years and years.

4. Oversized boyfriend coat. A must have for your winter wardrobe; throw over any outfit for an instant style update. A double breasted military coat or a pea coat are perfect for the androgynous look.

5. Winter/ army boots. From Timberlands and Caterpillars to the old classic Dr. Martins, there has been a massive trend for oversized boots this year. Guaranteed to toughen up any outfit, these boots are perfect for Durham students battling slippery hills and cobbles on a daily basis.

6. The oversized jumper. An obvious choice for Durham, oversized jumpers are a comfy wardrobe staple that can be worn with everything and will keep you warm over the winter months. Try a polo neck jumper or buy in shades of monochrome for a stylish nod to A/W 14 catwalk trends.

7. A well-tailored suit. Not just for interviews or special occasions, a well-fitting suit can be versatile when used as separates. Try pairing the suit jacket with a loose fitting dress for a girlish and sophisticated outfit, or team the suit trousers with a cashmere or super soft jumper and stiletto heels.
