A Guide to Looking after That Brilliant Body of Yours

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

Three of our Her Campus writers got together this week to combine their tips on how to live that healthy, happy life we all aspire to. These days we’re always seeing great examples being set by bloggers, chefs, celebrities, sportspeople, and even those around us. Bringing out the best of our bodies has never been so tempting, nor so easy!

Charlie says… ‘Eat Healthy’

There’s a new trend in town- eating healthily! Rather than eating little or excessively exercising, there’s now a much healthier alternative. People such as Ella Woodward of Deliciously Ella, and Joe Wicks of the Body Coach, are proving to people that by eating healthily, you can look and, most importantly, feel better in yourself!

Ella Woodward- Deliciously Ella

Ella was diagnosed with a rare disease, Postural Tachycardia Syndrome, which made her very weak and affected her day-to-day life. In an effort to change this, she completely transformed her diet. Her new diet involved giving up all meat, dairy, sugar, gluten and anything processed with chemicals or additives. This change of diet had an incredible effect on her health, and she’s now stopped her medication and feels better than ever.

The best thing about these recipes is that they genuinely are delicious, and you know at the same time that everything you’re putting in your body is good for it! My personal favourites are the lentil bolognaise, the sweet potato and chickpea stew and the sweet potato brownies- perfect for cold winter days.

Joe Wicks- The Body Coach

These recipes are better suited for people who prefer to eat lots of meat in their diets. The Body Coach proves how easy it is to make healthy meals as his recipes only take 15 minutes – #leanin15. Check out his instagram @thebodycoach, for videos on how to make a wide range of his delicious meals- featuring his notorious (and slightly annoying) voice!

Jamie Oliver- Everyday Super Food

You may have seen Jamie Oliver’s recent documentary where he proved to the nation how bad sugar is for you and all of its adverse effects on your health. His latest cookery book, Everyday Super Food, is full of tasty but still healthy recipes. Apparently, by eating this food from his new book, Jamie has lost two stone!

Hopefully, people will start to gradually realise that it’s so easy to eat healthily and what you have to eat to achieve this isn’t any less delicious!

Sre says… ‘Exercise’

We know, we know, it’s sweaty, boring and we can’t normally be bothered to do it, but checkout these useful tips to keep fit and healthy in ways that can still be considered exercise, but have the minimalist effort exerted!

Walking

Believe us or not, but studies indicate that walking briskly for 30 minutes is far healthier than going on a run. Now, being Durhamites, walking everywhere is no stranger to us. We do it to get to the library, to college, into town and even to visit that annoying friend who signed so late they ended up in Gilesgate. Of course, if you are one of those first year bailey-college Historians who can tumble out of bed and into their seminar and never frequent the library then you may need to try slightly harder. Merely set aside 30 minutes of your day to go on a lovely walk by the river and you are well on your way to being fit and healthy!

Jogging

I know, I know. I’M SORRY. I brought up the word everyone hates. But trust me on this one. Rather than looking at jogging as a mammoth task you have to fit your day around, set aside ten minutes each day to don those trainers, and that Nike kit your mum nudgingly bought you, and head out. Ten minutes. That’s all. Just ten, tiny minutes. Studies indicate that jogging for this amount of time slashes your risk of heart disease and helps to keep you fit and healthy. So, to tie in with your walking regime, have a jog around Durham, explore some alleyways you’ve never been down and then head back, kick your feet up and indulge in some Netflix and Chill as praise for your hard (ten minutes) work.

Weights

To finish off your minimal effort exercise regime, half way through your 10 minute run, stop off at your college gym and do 10 minutes of toning exercises. This will help reduce the appearance of cellulite, keep you healthy and make you feel great!

So there you have it, who knew keeping fit could be so easy! See you all jogging round Durham soon!

And Kathryn says… ‘Live!’

It’s not just matter of cooking healthy meals and setting aside time to stretch those legs, it’s the little changes that will change the way you live as well. Looking after your body looking after your mental health and happiness, just as much as it means looking after your physical health.

Me-Time

It’s easy at uni to be busy all day and not stop until you hit your pillow. Staying active like this is great, but it’s also important to make sure you’re allowing some time away from the bustle of sports, rehearsals, lectures and parties, to just focus on yourself. This might mean reading your (non-degree related) book for a bit, going for a walk (or jog), or even doing a bit of low-key yoga or meditation before bed. I’ve found that any time you can make to just be by yourself and enjoy your own thoughts can be good for staying confident and comfortable in yourself as a person. Even the most sociable people need a break from the chatter occasionally!
