Without a doubt, this is one of my favourite places to go in Durham.
Established in 2015, Lounge is the perfect ‘modern European street café and bar’. Offering a huge range of food and drink from a fantastic savoury menu to a range of crepes and waffles – as well as smoothies, brunch, and even a wide range of wines and beers – this place has something for everyone!
I myself have become a fairly regular visitor to Lounge, so much so that I have become very well acquainted with the (primarily sweet) menu. The ‘Lounge Waffle’ would be my personal recommendation, perhaps accompanied by one of their smoothies or milkshakes. Situated across two floors, don’t be put off it looks busy – there’s plenty of space upstairs! The place itself has a great vibe, a nice mix of those catching up, those studying, and those who are simply just really hungry!
The staff are genuinely lovely people, I’m always greeted by a friendly face – and although it’s always busy – I’ve never felt rushed and the table service makes the whole visit really special, and so much more relaxed.
This year I organised a ‘coffee shop stroll’ as part of Butler Freshers week 2016, and the staff were fantastic in ensuring tables were reserved, and that the service was quick and efficient – as we had a few other coffee shops to visit! The freshers that came along enjoyed a range of food, from burgers to cake to waffles to smoothies – that’s what makes Lounge so great – it’s the ideal place to go to as there’s something to appeal to everyone!
Another huge plus is the opening hours, Lounge is open from 9am – 10pm. As its open so late, it is the perfect place to go to for dessert after dinner, or just for a really relaxed evening drink. The cookie dough is a must try, served with ice cream and chocolate sauce – beyond tasty!
This weekend I even discovered that they offered food and drink to take away! My friends came to visit, so we grabbed a coffee to enjoy whilst we walked along the river – the hot chocolate is so good, and their latté comes highly recommended!
An absolute gem of a café, staffed by lovely people and serving fantastic food. A must visit!
