Money Saving Travel Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

Statistically, millennials have travelled more than any other generation. So, how can we all manage to keep this up whilst not obliterating our financial futures? Look no further. Here are 7 tips to get the travel lifestyle of your Instagram dreams:

Book in advance if you can

Often, cheaper deals can be found if you begin to search for them at least 6 months before the actual time you wish to travel. Also, choose to travel during weekdays and at off peak times as these can lower the price too.

Look out for free museum days or discount vouchers

Paying for entry to museums and other tourist traps can cost a fortune but it doesn’t have to. National Holidays is your best friend for finding deals to bring the price down. Making the effort to seek out some discount codes online before you go out may take time but will save your budget in the long run.

Clear your cache in your Internet browser

This can help make sure that you’re getting the best travel and accommodation prices. Sometimes, websites track your data and will jack up prices if you’re looking at too many related holiday sites; browsing in ‘incognito’ can avoid this.

Find hostels that balance location and price

It’s not worth saving ÂŁ5 a night for a hostel in the middle of nowhere as you’ll end up spending double that on public transport. It’s all about finding somewhere with a good balance between price and location.

Bring your ID and student card everywhere

Most countries in Europe offer reduced or free entry for <26. But be careful, sometimes they'll ask for ID and your student card, so make sure you have both on you at all times!

Choose one meal a day where you eat cheap

For example, at breakfast you could stick to sandwiches or just a coffee, instead of an expensive brunch. This way you can afford to splurge on a nicer dinner. It is also a good idea to try and find hostels with kitchen facilities; you can save so much money cooking your own meals!

Reach out to your Facebook friends

Staying with friends and people you know can save you a fortune on accommodation, but aside from this, they can also show you their favourite places and give you insider tips about the area!

I hope these will help you in your travels. However, it’s always worth saving up as much as you can anyway – it isn’t worth travelling on a budget that’s so tight it prevents you from really enjoying the places you visit!
