What to do on Valentine’s Day if You’re Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

Valentine’s Day is a depressing day all about love that serves to torture those of us who can’t seem to actually find anybody to love. Whether you’re the kind of person who has only ever received a Valentine’s card in Year 2 (and let’s be honest, it was probably from your parents), or if it is your first year as a single pringle after coming out of a relationship, there are loads of things to do on the 14th that will hopefully help you cope at this traumatic time in your life.

1)    Go out!

This is probably one of the only nights of the year some poor, unfortunate soul won’t have to suffer the dreaded, “Sorry, I have a girlfriend,” after grafting all night in Klute. There’s sure to be more singletons out looking for love than at a Take Me Out after party.

2)    Fifty Shades

Yes, it’s inevitable that there will be numerous couples sat in the cinema with you, set out to spice up their Valentine’s Day experience by watching Fifty Shades of Grey. But I’d also put a lot of money on the fact that there will be just as many groups of single girls there looking to find solace in their true Valentine: Christian Grey.

3)    Bridget Jones

Some people just simply find comfort in ‘doing a Bridget Jones’ on Valentine’s Day. This essentially means lying in bed or on the sofa with as much pizza, wine, chocolate and ice cream as you can manage, watching films that you know will make you cry. Some call it torture, others call it therapy.

4)    Go home!

What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than with your family? No, seriously. There is great logic in this. The likelihood is that your parents will just be so happy to have you home from uni that they totally won’t mind if you crash their romantic Valentine’s dinner. Lobster and champagne anyone?

Overall, just be comforted by the knowledge that Easter is just round the corner and Easter is a time when we ALL get given chocolate!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
