The Man Behind the Camera: Spencer Yaffe
Want to get to know this weeks Campus Celeb Spencer Yaffe? Well make an appointment because this man is crazy busy! He is involved in so many organizations and clubs on campus; he really does do it all! Spencer is from Philadelphia, PA and is a sophomore here at Eckerd majoring in Political Science Pre-Law. Even if you do not know Spencer directly, I’m sure you have seen him around campus at a lot of the big events because he is the photographer for the current, marketing department, and waterfront! So if you’re in need of a photographer or want your face all over the campus activites facebook page, definitely contact Spencer. He is also involved in a ton of other activities on campus including, EC-SAR, EC-ERT, sound/lights/photoset-up, the elections committee and financial affairs committee of ECOS, and finally, VP of College Environment Scuba Club (scubijew). Clearly, Spencer is super involved on campus and I’m sure you’ll run into him or meet him at some point during your time here at Eckerd!
Florida is pretty far away from Spencer’s home in PA so he said the reason he came to Eckerd was because of the location! He believes that Eckerd provides both a unique learning environment as well as an excellent social atmosphere. Coming from a pretty experienced scuba diver (he has been diving since he was 5!) it’s no surprise that Spencer thinks that Florida is the perfect location because he can get more diving experience! However, he has already dove in the Bahamas, Florida, PR, Bonaira, Curaçao, Caymans, Virgin Islands (US and British), Honduras, and Costa Rica!! So, being the VP of the scuba diving club is definitely the perfect activity for Spencer. Another one of the hobbies that he enjoys is photography, because he does not have to be in the pictures and he enjoys recording the happiness of others. Overall, Spencer is so fortunate to be able to capture both the beautiful scenery and people at Eckerd College but also the underwater beauty that Florida has to offer!
Two of the amazing opportunities that Eckerd has to offer that Spencer takes advantage of are the EC-SAR and EC-ERT teams! EC-SAR is actually one of the reasons why he came to Eckerd; he loves the water and helping others. EC-ERT is a little different, he also wanted the opportunity to focus more on the medical side as well as assist more people on Eckerd, as opposed to the entire Tampa community. His best advice for anyone who is interested in joining either EC-SAR or EC-ERT is to work on time management because both teams require a lot of commitment. The commitment to working hard does not end for Spencer when summer break begins because this summer he is going to Europe to study International Law with the spring-summer course! He is even going to spend an extra few days there to celebrate his birthday with friend before he comes home to Philly for a few days. After traveling abroad he is going to drive down to North Carolina to get certified in EMT and then he will be back to Eckerd to welcome the new freshman for Autumn Term! If you have not met Spencer yet I definitely encourage you all to go up to the guy with the camera at all of the events and have him take a picture of you and your friends! (Haha) You’ll get to meet a great guy and be famous on the Campus Activities page on Facebook!
