If you did not get the chance to watch the Golden Globes, I am sure you have at least heard about the speech Meryl Streep gave as she received the Globes’ career achievement award. In her acceptance speech she took the time to make a political statement instead of the usual thank yous. And of course depending on your views thought it was a great speech or terrible and based on lies. But despite your views there are great statements that Meryl Streep made that we can use in our everyday lives. “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence.” If you are a Trump supporter I ask that you just ignore the fact that she was saying this about him and instead take those words in and apply it to your life. There has been so much hate going on not even in the United States but around the world in general.
In Meryl’s speech as well she points out that our media and our voices are more important than ever and we have the right to speak freely. Respected journalists are how we get our everyday information in the world and it is important that they continue to give us the truth and are protected for doing so.
Meryl Streep used her platform to speak about her political views in a well-mannered and calm way. She got her point across without name-calling and even without saying his name in general. Our President then responded (Link to Donald Trump’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/search?q=donald%20trump&src=typd) calling her “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” and a “Hillary flunky who lost big.” I do not think that this was the best way to address his thoughts on the situation. To be the better person he should have never said anything or if he did not to insight name-calling because that just makes Meryl’s speech right in what she said about him, “and when the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose.”
