5 Great Causes to Donate to this Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Let’s face it; the holiday season is just another name for civilized chaos. Between the craziness of shopping, parties, and the overall holiday cheer, it’s easy to neglect the true fortune of our privileged lives. For this reason, the holiday season is the perfect time to give back. The following charitable organizations are in need during the holiday seasons!

Feeding America

Ever year, the Feeding America organization donates 2 billion pounds of food to hungry Americans. The organization accepts coffee, tea, canned goods, and the like. Donations are accepted at over 200 food banks across the country. Click here to find the food bank closest to you.

Orphan Foundation of America’s Red Scarf Project

Up until December 15, knitters can donate a homemade red scarf to the Orphan Foundation of America’s Red Scarf Project. These scarves are donated to foster teens to stay warm during the cold winter months. Scarves must be 60” long and 5”to 8” wide. They can be mailed to: Foster Care to Success, Red Scarf Project21351 Gentry Drive Suite 130 Sterling, VA 20166.

One Warm Coat

This organization, represented by Burlington Coat Factory, collects gently used or homemade coats. These coats are donated to those in need to keep them warm during the cold winter months. Click here to find a coat drive nearest you.

Toys for Tots

The Toys for Tots program, run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve distributes toys to children whose families cannot afford to purchase toys on their own. The organization accepts new, unwrapped, or homemade toys. These toys will be given as Christmas gifts to less fortunate youngsters. Click here to find a drop-off center near you.

My Two Front Teeth

My Two Front Teeth is an on online organization that fulfills a less fortunate child’s Christmas wish. The organization lists products that children have on their Christmas Lists. Using a credit card, you can purchase a toy for a child online. My Two Front Teeth will take care of the purchase, wrapping, and delivery. Check it out here.

These organizations are charitable, easily accessible, and remind us of what the holiday season is truly about. Encourage your friends and family to check out these organizations. Perhaps a donation to an organization can replace a gift! Happy Holidays!
