A Day Trip to Salem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

If you and your friends decide you want to get in the Halloween spirit this year, look no further than a town called Salem, MA. Remember those witch trials you learned about in middle school? Yes, this is the place where they all went down many years ago. Now, Salem is a top tourist destination for those who want a bit of Halloween all year round, and it’s extra spooky this time of year! In this bewitched town there are so many things to see and do, so I’ve narrowed down some of my favorites for you!

What to See:

Hocus Pocus House– Is “Hocus Pocus” a childhood fave? Still is? Well, it just so happens the house from the movie is located IN Salem!

The Witch House-This is the last remaining house that was around during the Witch Trials of 1962. You can take a guided, or self-guided tour of the home where Jonathan Corwin lived- he was a judge for the trials!

The House of Seven Gables- This historic home has many stories to be told, and many spirits to visit, so make sure to tour it! It also holds the same name as a book that was inspired by the events that occurred at this house!

Where to Visit:

Salem Witch Museum– This is Salem’s number one visited museum! It’s a classic and features exhibits and a show about all your favorite witches- historical and fictional! Make sure you visit, my pretty…and your little dog, too!

The Nightmare Factory-Salem is home to many haunted houses, but this one claims to be the original! It is very popular, and worth a visit for a scare!

The Hawthorne Hotel- Looking to conjure up some spirits? No need to…Bridget Bishop is said to haunt the hotel to this day… Plus, they host a variety of magical events, including some balls.

Where to Eat:

Witch’s Brew Café- As if the cute name isn’t reason enough to visit, come here for your basic pub food- perfect for a chilly day! Apps, salads, soups, sandwiches and burgers are the main attractions on the menu.

Pickering Wharf- Here, there are a variety of restaurants for all taste palettes, and price ranges.  If you’re a seafood lover, there is plenty to find at the wharf. Plus, a meal with a view on the water? Count me in!

Get to Salem by bus, commuter rail, or MBTA! You don’t want to miss out on the festivities- make sure you pay a visit to the place for haunted happenings in the U.S.! There are plenty of tours, museums, and shops to see and there are always extra magical things happening here during the month of October. Oh, and if you see Binx, be sure to say hi for me! ;)
