Two-time academy nominated, costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, once again proves to create a stunning wardrobe for the new film adaptation of Anna Karenina of Leo Tolstoy’s 1877 novel. From the silks, to the furs, to the fine jewelry, the whole palette created will be the perfect match for this time period. For inspiration, Joe Wright, the director, suggested Durran to study 1950s silhouettes. She studied pieces by Lavin, Christian Dior, Jacques Fathand, and Balenciaga, along with period painting and photographs of 1870s in Russia. She also carefully analyzed the early dresses of Charles Frederick Worth, in the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to get a better sense of the time period itself. She created a contemporary fusion between 1870s and 1950s wardrobe that suited the film perfectly. Along with the wardrobe came the finishing touches that included about $2 million worth of Chanel jewelry. Durran expressed during an interview with WWD that  “Never in my experience on film sets have I seen anyone with such a range of diamonds and pearls. But I have to say it was very useful for Keira to have at her fingertips all this fine jewelry, as Anna would. It was the aura of Anna Karenina that we were creating.” This film will be showing some of the most majestic wardrobe in a film this year, which is to die for. Those clothes might not suit today’s modern world, but there is a way to acquire Anna Karenina wardrobe at your fingertips. It is through Banana Republic’s Anna Karenina collection. Banana Republic created a collection dedicated to Anna Karenina, which was curated by Jacqueline Durran.
