In an effort to connect with the Emerson community more directly, we are taking our articles into the organizations that are so loved by the students at Emerson. These organizations work year-round to benefit the community in a number of different ways, and we at Her Campus at Emerson want to recognize the hard-work and dedication that go into running each and every one of them. In this article, we will be featuring Delta Kappa Alpha!Â
Delta Kappa Alpha was founded in the fall of 2016 and became an official national chapter during the 2018 spring semester. They are a co-ed, professional cinematic fraternity that “fosters lifelong character, collaborative and creative storytelling, ethical and productive business practices, philanthropic action, and fraternal bonds by and between students of the cinematic arts.” The Emerson chapter of Delta Kappa Alpha currently has 55 active members, many of which are currently studying in Emerson’s Los Angeles campus. They also have over 50 alumni from the chapter.Â
The fraternity has a lot of members, and their executive board works hard to make sure that everything functions smoothly. Leading the chapter as president is senior Visual Media Arts (VMA) major Spencer Wright. Gabe Shapera (junior VMA major) holds the position of vice president, and Ryan Forsyth (junior VMA major) is the chapter’s standards chair. Additionally, the chapter has a position in cinematic affairs, the chair of which is junior VMA major Sam Stenson. The programming chair is a journalism senior, Emily Cristobal, and the fraternity’s public relations chair is Rosana Peña, a senior majoring in business of creative enterprises.
One of the things that Delta Kappa Alpha (DKA) is most proud of was their 1-minute film festival. It was open to all Emerson students and is a competition that is similar to the 48-hour film festival run by the fill immersion residence communities. Additionally, they are proud of their Bolex Workshop. This was an event also open to the Emerson community that allowed students to learn and handle Bolex film cameras. They were also to recently hold an Oscar’s screening party for people who were interested. Looking forward to this upcoming semester, the organization is really looking forward to their spring formal event, which will take place later in the semester. They are also hoping to collaborate more with other fraternity and sorority life organizations at Emerson for more events on campus.Â
As much as the team loves running events, their favorite is their recruitment cycles. They truly enjoy meeting potential new members and getting to go to all of the events with them in addition to their fellow members. DKA is a unique Fraternity on campus, since they have cinematic arts as the basis for the organization. Their vision statement is to be “recognized as the premier institute of upstanding entertainment industry leaders.”Â
Finally, we asked the members of Delta Kappa Alpha how they would describe themselves, to which they responded “creative, proactive, [and] fraternal bonds.” They went on to explain that they chose creative and proactive because these “are two of [Delta Kappa Alpha’s] 10 Jewels, which are values that DKA holds for all its members.” Additionally, they chose the phrase “fraternal bonds” because they “strive to have our organization feel like a family.” If you are looking to get involved with DKA, make sure to follow or message them on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube). You can also talk to any of their DeKas to learn more about the fraternity. You will then be able to stay up to date on their spring and fall recruitments.
