10 Reasons to Love the Rain

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

Now, I know what you are thinking. Why on earth would someone love rain? It can be freezing, it’s wet, and it causes the ground to become overrun with mud. But those are only tiny negative consequences of this weather, and there are plenty more reasons to fall in love with it! There’s even a word for people who love the rain like me (and soon to be you): pluviophiles. Join the lovers of rain, after reading the top ten reasons why people wish for storms.

1. Rainy days bring out the cutest weather gear, whether it’s for people or animals. Rain jackets come in all colors and patterns. This not only helps you be stylish, but more importantly, prepared! Not to mention, you can even add a matching pair of rainboots and an umbrella to complete the look.

2. Rainy days allow for more productivity at work, according to a Harvard study. Sunshine and beautiful blue skies distract workers, while cloudy days create an increase in efficiency. Does this mean we should pray for our finals to fall on rainy days? I think so!

3. A rainy day is the perfect reason to stay in bed all day, marathoning movies on netflix or reading a good book. Need I say more

4. One of my favorite reasons for rain is petrichor. What does that word mean exactly? It’s the definition of that wonderfully fresh smell you get after the first rain of a long dry season.

5. RAIN MAKES YOUR HAIR SOFTER! That’s right, so don’t hide your hair under a hood to escape the water. Rain is rejuvenating for your hair! The water in rain has a neutral pH and lacks hard minerals and unnatural harmful materials. Showers can have hard water and make rinsing out your shampoo difficult. So even science agrees the rain is beneficial.

6. Do you love soup? Coffee? Tea? Sweets? Then rainy days are perfect to exploit those cravings of yours. What’s better then sitting down and enjoying a hot cup of your favorite drink and a soft chewy cookie? Literally nothing. You can’t fight this. You can even have friends and loved ones join in!

7. The pitter patters of rain on windows and roofs create such a pleasant and peaceful atmosphere. The white noise created from the rain drops allows your mind to relax and can even help you sleep better! I know I sleep better during the pouring rain.

8. You’ve never truly experienced the joy of rain until you’ve danced during a storm. Grab a friend, a significant other, or go alone, and lose yourself in the moment. There’s nothing more freeing and memorable than dancing until you’re soaking wet in the middle of a storm. Maybe even grab one of those movie kisses in the rain – that’s a moment to remember. Look at Troy and Gabriella; I’d say they’d agree with me!

9. A beautiful result of rain is, of course, a rainbow. The colors are vivid and striking.  Who doesn’t smile at seeing a rainbow in the sky above

10. One last reason to cherish rainy days is a surprising one. Did you know certain crimes rates decrease during rain? Well, now you do! Maybe rain isn’t such a bad thing after all.
