If you’re an Emmanuel College student with a meal plan, you know Randy. Often found at the register in the dining hall, or working in the Atrium late at night, Randy always has a smile on his face or a joke to share. I had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with Randy and learning more about this popular Bon Appétit employee…

HCE: How long have you been working here at Emmanuel?
Randy: Four years
HCE: What has been your favorite part of working here or your best memory?
Randy: My favorite part of working here is the food, the atmosphere, just the everyday life of college, you know?
HCE: Definitely! Have you ever witnessed anything particularly funny happening while at work?
Randy: Nothing in particular, just couple of daily jokes [with the students]. You know like for Halloween, we had [cookies that look like] fingers, so when they ask for fingers and fries, I put them out. I’m like, “Yeah, you want fingers and fries.”
HCE: [laughs] I’ll be sure to stop by on Halloween, then. Do you ever actually eat Bon Appétit food?
Randy: All the time. I take it home. I don’t mind it!
HCE: What’s your favorite?
Randy: Chicken patty sandwich with cheese.
HCE: Anything else on it?
Randy: Oh yeah, barbecue sauce, lettuce, onions, pickles….
HCE: Wow, the whole nine yards! So, where might we find you when you’re not working or on the weekend?
Randy: At home, or in Allston at my friend’s house. Oh, I’m chilling with my nephew tonight! He’s fourteen so it’s pretty cool.
HCE: That’s great! Do you have any other hobbies or favorite pastimes?
Randy: Sports and um…Japanese anime. [laughs] Yeah, I really like that.
HCE: What is your favorite song to jam out to in the shower or in the car?
Randy: Oh, okay I got one! Her name is Alina Baraz; it’s called “Maybe” . It’s like a neo-soul/techno kinda song, I don’t like rap. It’s soulful you know?
HCE: Who or what is your spirit animal?
Randy: A lion. Definitely. Yeah, ’cause I’m a Leo. It always makes me think of Leo from That 70’s Show, you know who I’m talking about? He was the smartest one on that show.
HCE: [laughs] Of course! So, tell us something about you that EC students might be surprised to find out.
Randy: Um…I’m shy. I don’t actually talk a lot. I do stand-up once in a while but that’s about it!
HCE: You save your jokes for us?
Randy: Yeah, yeah, I like to talk to y’all.
HCE: Aw, we definitely appreciate it. Finally, what is your favorite inspirational quote or life motto that you would want to share with all of us?
Randy: I have lots of them… My favorite one is probably, “Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will get you killed.” I know that sounds like it’s for a mature audience, but I think it’s true. My other favorite is “Manners will get you so far in life”… You could be a bad person, but if you have good manners, I won’t see you that way. I’m from the south, so that’s where that came from probably.
On behalf of the EC community, thank you to Randy for always making us laugh and for everything else you do for us all every day!
