A Senior Send-Off for the Her Campus Emmanuel’s 2018-2019’s Co-Social Media director Melanie! Keep reading to hear about her times with HCE, advice for fellow Emmanuel students and some memories about Emmanuel College!
Name: Melanie Albright
Major: Communications and Media Studies
Minors: Marketing and Art History
Dream Job: Vogue Met Gala Liaison for the Metropolitan Museum of Arts
HCE Exec Board Position: CO-Social Media Director
Favorite Emmanuel Class: Communications senior seminar with Andrea McDonnell and any Cynthia Fowler class (I know, shocking!)
Favorite Thing to do in Boston: Walking from the top of Newbury street to the Public Gardens and running around in the flowers during the spring!
HCE: Tell us a little about your history with Her Campus over the past four years!
MELANIE: I joined Her Campus my sophomore year at the insistence of my roommate Kenzie Moore. I have no idea why it took me so long to join but once I did I was so happy. It’s such a fantastic way to meet new people, this club has become a second girl gang for me. I know when I go to a meeting on Monday’s at six (RIP) I will be surrounded by like-minded women that have the same passions as myself and want to get things done. I became co-social media director first semester of my junior year and returned to this position this spring. I have loved this position because it’s really fun to pick memes, quotes and fun images for our Instagram page and trying to come up with creative copy for our other channels. I really think that this has helped me professionally too because social media is an area I have an interest in. I also got to intern with Her Campus nationals and I think my involvement with my chapter really helped to put my application over the edge.
HCE: What has been your favorite part of being a part of the HCE team?
MELANIE: I honestly love the fact that it’s a team. When this group of women wants to get something done, it happens. It’s inspiring to watch and even better to be a part of. I always want to be my best, most creative self when I’m around these women. I also loved going to Her Conference with everyone. It was such a FUN event (and we got the best swag bags). After going each year I was always so excited to go back to campus with new ideas I had learned from the speakers and panels to bring back to our chapter.
HCE: Do you have any advice for HCE in the future?
MELANIE: Get involved! I was timid at first as a “gen mem” because the exec board makes a lot of the decisions, but they always want to hear from gen mems! Make your ideas heard. Getting involved with events and later with the board made my experience with the club a lot more active.
HCE: What have been some of your favorite moments and memories at Emmanuel?
MELANIE: I love love fashion, so I have had the best time working on the fashion show here every year and also attending college fashion week. College fashion week is such a fun event because the looks that Her Campus puts together are always so cute, the event is beautiful and it’s great to meet girls who are a part of other chapters. The fashion show at Emmanuel is my favorite event we do all year because I think it is really important. We have done it in support of different causes each year, Eating Disorder Awareness, Dress for Success and Body Positivity, and I find each of these to be wonderful causes to support. It is a very stressful event because there are so many moving parts, but when it all comes together I feel a sense of accomplishment and pride.
HCE: I know it’s slightly anxiety-inducing, but any plans for after you graduate?
MELANIE: OY, that’s a bit of a doozy. Right now I’m actively applying and interviewing for jobs in the communications field but who knows! This summer regardless of what happens I’m hoping to have fun. It sounds like a goofy, not serious answer for someone with a college degree, but I’ve worked really hard over the past four years! I’m looking forward to relaxing a bit before jumping into the next chapter of my life. So the real answer is TBD :)
HCE: Do you have any advice or anything you would want to say to freshman Melanie?
MELANIE: RELAX! I put a lot of pressure on myself in school so I want to tell little Melanie that it’s all going to work out. Freshman Melanie would be happy to find out that I have a solid and lovely group of friends, an experienced resume, and beautiful memories from my college experience. Don’t get overwhelmed you’re where you’re supposed to be and you’re prepared for it.
Thank you so much for everything you’ve done with HCE! We have absolutely loved having you as Co-Social Media director this year. Good luck with everything in the future, we know you’re bound for great things. We’re going to miss you too much! HCXO
