For Women’s History Month I wanted to sit down and speak with an influential and powerful woman. The first person that came to mind was my mom! She has been a firefighter in the city of Milton for over 20 years now and I couldn’t think of anyone better to speak to than my personal role model. She has always been such a strong figure in my life and I’ve always been so proud to tell people that my mom is a firefighter!
First, can you tell me a little bit about yourself and what you do?
I am 57 years old. I am married with two children and I live in Abington MA. For the last 24 years I have been a firefighter for the town of Milton which is where I grew up.
What initially drew you to this line of work?
I grew up with many firefighters in my family. My dad was the Chief of the Milton Fire Department. My oldest brother was a Lieutenant in the Department when I was hired and eventually became Chief. My brother really encouraged me to first take the test and then take the job.
What are some challenges you’ve faced at your job?
The biggest challenge I have ever faced was learning I was pregnant two weeks after starting the job. Fortunately there wasn’t a Fire Academy available for me to go to right away. I spent the first year learning what I could on the job while pregnant. I had to go to Fire Academy 7 weeks after giving birth. It was physically demanding and very stressful having to care for an infant while attending academy every day for 8 weeks. Also most of the guys in the department were older and weren’t very accepting of a female firefighter – not to mention a pregnant one!
What is your favorite part of what you do?
My favorite part of the job is that it is very exciting. You never know what you will be faced with when you start your shift. It also feels great helping people, whether it be a medical emergency, car accident, house fire etc.
What is something you’ve learned at work?
The most valuable thing I have learned is how to be a team player. I work with some great people and we all have different strengths and weaknesses but we work together to get the job done.
Who is someone that has inspired you?
My dad and my brother have been my biggest inspirations. They were both so dedicated to this career and I hope I make them proud.
What would you say to young girls interested in what you do?
I would say to any girl that aspires to be a firefighter to not be afraid to try it. You may not be as strong as a male but as I said it is a team effort. Be as strong as you can be and learn all you can about the job.
Any advice for young women in college?
My advice for women or anyone in college is to find a career that you love. It may take some trial and error but it is so important to love what you do.
