Let’s Talk About My Spotify Wrapped 2021

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

It’s the most important time of the year, when everyone and their mother posts their 2021 Spotify Wrapped! Every December, Spotify comes out with a compilation of your most listened to music and artists from that past year. I always enjoy looking at my Spotify Wrapped and I wanted to share my thoughts about this year’s wrap up.

My Top Artists of 2021:

  1. Drake
  2. Megan Thee Stallion
  3. Kanye West
  4. Doja Cat
  5. The Neighbourhood

Honestly, I was not surprised by Drake being my #1 artist of 2021. In fact, I was in the top 3% of his listeners this year! I was surprised when I saw that Megan Thee Stallion was my #2 artist—I did not think I even listened to her that much. But, I guess when I played the song “Body” by her almost every day, it gave her the #2 spot. Doja Cat and Kanye West being on my list made sense; they are solid artists in a lot of my playlists I create. I was also very surprised that The Neighbourhood was not ranked higher, I had their music on a constant repeat this year.

My Top Songs of 2021:

  1. “Cry Baby” by Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby
  2. “Looking Out For You” by Joy Again
  3. “Body” by Megan Thee Stallion
  4. “Cash Sh*t” by Meg Thee Stallion and DaBaby
  5. “INDUSTRY BABY” by Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow

The main theme I notice in all of my top songs is that I discovered them all from TikTok. It is crazy to me how much of an influence TikTok has on my music taste. Again, I was not expecting Megan Thee Stallion songs to take ⅗ spots on my list, but I am not complaining! I listened to my #1 song, Cry Baby, 82 times this year, I don’t know if I should be impressed or embarrassed. A majority of these songs are rap except the #2 spot, “Looking Out For You,” which has a simple and sweet beat. I played this song a lot when I was in a good mood.

One of my favorite parts of Spotify Wrapped this year was the component of “Your Audio Aura.” This aura is dependent on what your topic music moods are and includes an image of your aura. My music moods consisted of energy and bold. My aura was a light purple and orange hue. I really enjoyed this new aspect of Spotify Wrapped and I think it was a great way of engaging their followers.

Overall, I was surprised by my Spotify Wrapped. I was not expecting certain songs and artists to be in my top list. In 2021, I listened to 23,682 minutes and my top genre was Dance Pop (I think this has been my top genre for years now). I love that Spotify does this every year and I think it is a great way to musically reflect on the crazy year we have had.

For this year, I want to broaden my horizons and listen to new artists and new songs. I want there to be variation in my top lists from this year. I can’t wait to start listening!
