Why Call Her Daddy isn’t all it’s hyped up to be, and here’s what you need to listen to instead

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about the Call Her Daddy podcast. Not to mention, you’ve probably listened to at least one enthusiastic lecture about how it’s the most revolutionary feminist message in the 21st century. As someone who loves podcasts and empowering female messages, I thought I would give it a shot.

After listening to a few episodes and realizing that it was created under Barstool Sports, I realized it wasn’t for me, nor was it spreading the feminist message everyone claimed it was. There is blatant misogynistic language that plagues the podcast in a way that makes it almost feel like this isn’t something created for women. Alex Cooper, the host, talks about rating your physical attractiveness from 1-10, and making up for missing points in a sexual way.

A podcast that shames women for their physical appearance and is affiliated with a widely known racist and misogynistic company shouldn’t be your #1 source of advice. There are, however, numerous underrated, and actually empowering/helpful podcasts out there.

1. Binchtopia

Binchtopia is my all time favorite podcast, hosted by Julia Hava and Eliza McLamb. In each episode they cover an arrangement of topics like self care, therapy, relationships, and more. It feels like you’re sitting in a room having a casual conversation with friends, but they know everything under the moon and how to solve all your problems.

2. Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain

Emma Chamberlain has been well loved by the internet for years now, and a podcast was exactly what we needed from her. If you’re ever having a bad day just plug your headphones in, drink some tea, and listen to this podcast. She gives advice in such a calming and endearing way, and really emphasizes self love and caring for yourself, something women need to hear more.

3. Sex and the Sydnee

If you’re a Sex and the City fan like me, this is the podcast for you. Sydnee Paige achieves what Call Her Daddy was supposed to be but failed miserably at. She discusses sex shamelessly and answers the questions we’ve all been too afraid to ask or Google. Her podcast truly places importance on women and their experiences, and not how they can make male sex fantasies come true.

Listening to a podcast on the way to work, class, or while you’re doing the dishes is a great way to be productive  and learn something new. However, it’s so important to evaluate what you choose to listen to. Call Her Daddy has fooled hundreds of women into thinking it’s an empowering feminist message. Challenge yourself to dive a little deeper into what you’re consuming, and the impact it has on the world around us.
