It’s late January and we are officially in the middle of winter. No matter where you come from, Atlanta’s winters are harsh. With high levels of humidity and a recent trend to drop into the 20s, winter here is usually wet and rainy.
However even though this weather can be so dreary—we don’t even have the perk of snow—you can add some excitement through your wardrobe. Winter accessorizing is one of my favorite things to do because there are so many opportunities! Check out some recommendations I have below so you can still be fashionable despite being frozen.
The Coat is Key
Coming from Minnesota, I know cold. I also know that the coat you’re wearing can make or break how long you can survive in the tundra that’s outside your lovely heated home. I often dislike wearing a coat because they hide my outfit underneath, but if you find a versatile coat that you love, it can quickly become the perfect addition to your look for the day!
Here are some examples to inspire you:
For best results, try neutral colors or coats with a slimming effect. They can often get bulky so if you can find a coat that you look slim in, you know you’ve found a keeper. Additionally, I prefer longer coats—that way if I’m wearing a skirt or dress, they keep it from blowing up in the wind!
Gloves are Handy
I am addicted to my mittens. They are adorable, show off my personality, and are great conversation starters! Mittens and gloves are crucial for keeping your fingers warm and can add a pop of color to your coat.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Though I enjoy mittens, make sure to check out the gloves that allow you to text and click on screens even while you are wearing them! (The grey ones above are an example!) They are perfect for texting, or, if you’re like me, for choosing the playlist or song that I want to listen to on the walk to class.
Always Accessorize
In addition to gloves and mittens, I like to add a scarf in the same color. It can pull the whole ensemble together—besides, they keep you toasty! If it’s not quite cold enough to need a scarf for warmth (or if the temperature’s gone up 20° since you left your room this morning—a typical Atlanta occurrence), you can also just hang it around your jacket to create an elongated effect. Likewise, beanies and hats can be great for concealing bad hair days, pulling your outerwear outfit together, and staying warm.

Ultimately, have fun with your outerwear! You will use them for the whole season so I recommend neutral, practical, and durable items that show off your personal style. Good luck y’all, and stay warm out there! Remember: you can’t appreciate the summer as much if you don’t have some freezing winters!
