The temperature has been dropping, and some leaves are beginning to fall in Lullwater; however, it can still sometimes be hard to get into the Halloween spirit, and immerse yourself in spooky season since it’s still a bit too warm in Atlanta for sweater weather!
To help you get into the spirit of spooky season, here are some great songs to add to a Halloween playlist that you can listen to while making Pillsbury Halloween cookies and watching Hocus Pocus!
1. “Spooky Scary Skeletons” – Lady Dooley would be very proud of this pick. Bone-chilling in either its original form or with the fun remix!
2. “Witch Doctor” – A silly twist on using supernatural charms to attempt to get a girl to love the singer, this song is a Halloween party classic.
3. “Love Potion No. 9” – A catchy and rhythmic song, also about getting a girl to love the singer, but this time with a love potion. Hmmm, seems like there’s a theme here… disclaimer, you should definitely not try to invoke supernatural elements on your crush at the next Halloween party you’re at!
4. “Monster Mash” – A classic childhood song for creating hilarious JibJab videos, written by “The Crypt-Kickers” about a dance trend influencing monsters from vampires to Frankenstein.
5. “Thriller” – A Michael Jackson classic! The music video terrified me when I was younger, and gives the perfect creepy Halloween vibe for any spooky gathering.
6. “Time Warp” (and the rest of The Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack) – If you’ve never seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show, that is definitely something you should do soon! It tends to appeal to those who enjoy theater and musicals. Disclaimer, the show, in live or movie form, is a very gory and eccentric concept that some may find somewhat disturbing.
7. “Calling All The Monsters” – China Anne McClain coming in clutch with a real bop. This song has been stuck in my head since 5th grade and its upbeat tempo is perfect for a Halloween dance party.
8. “Somebody’s Watching Me” – One of the creepiest feelings is being alone, yet feeling like you aren’t actually alone. Rockwell sings that he “feels in the Twilight zone; “it’s a perfect song for the creepy Halloween feel.
9. “Ghostbusters” – Another classic Halloween movie! “Who you gonna call?”
10. “This is Halloween” – Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is another OG childhood Halloween movie. The Oogie Boogie still scares me tbh.
11. “Superstition” – A jam by Stevie Wonder, and not necessarily meant to be a Halloween themed song, however, the idea of superstition or belief in the supernatural gives it a place on my Halloween playlist.
12. “Maneater” – Obviously Hall & Oates aren’t actually singing about a girl who eats people rather than the concept of a girl who manipulates men, but the idea of cannibalism gives this bop a spot on the Halloween playlist.
14. “She Blinded Me With Science” – The 80s vibe of this song and the creepy bridge music, along with the continued concept of using potions or chemicals to make someone infatuated with you fit within our earlier supernatural category and thus makes the Halloween playlist.
15. “I Want Candy” – When we were younger, Halloween was all about trick or treating in order to collect the largest stash of sweets. Even though now it might be more about Instagrammable costumes and party hopping with a squad in coordinate costumes, this song brings back the Halloween nostalgia that is an important part of spooky season.
16. “I Put A Spell on You” – Another song with a New Orleans jazz feel and themes of using the supernatural to get someone to like the singer back. Who knows, maybe you’ll put a spell on someone with a super cute witch costume and then this song would be the perfect soundtrack!
