This week’s clumsy campus celebrity is 21-year-old, Katie Appleby.
Originally from Norfolk, 2nd year Conservation Ecology and Biology student Katie plays an active role on campus, holding the positions of FXU Volunteer Officer as well as Enterprise and Employability intern. Katie is also a STEM ambassador and mentor, which keeps her busy creating new after school clubs for children in Falmouth.
In September, Katie will be overcoming her personal struggle with Lupus, as well as her adversity to exercise, by climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with her ‘incredibly supportive’ boyfriend, Matt (who she met when she drunkenly stumbled over him during Fresher’s week…woops!), and fellow HC celeb, Chris. While the aim of the climb is to raise money for Hope for Children, with all money going towards education and medicine for underprivileged children in Tanzania and Uganda, Katie is interjecting some fun into her mission by aiming to be the first person to reach the summit dressed as a teletubby (Po, in case you were wondering!). You can sponsor her here!
As if Katie wasn’t busy enough, in her spare time she models for the Body Shop, which she says is “great fun.” She is also notoriously clumsy (see above for how she met her boyfriend!), having broken her arm on the Stannary stairs last year in an attempt to master ‘The Worm.’
Despite her unsuccessful breakdancing attempts, Katie described her experiences at university as “incredible,” and can’t believe how quickly the time has gone. She is incredibly thankful to everyone who has contributed to her experience so far.
