The nominations are in for this year’s Oscars! And now we must all wait for the eagerly anticipated Academy Awards Ceremony (The Oscars) of 2013 to find out the best motion picture, actors, actresses, cinematography, music, and the like of all big-hit films of 2012. HCX is here to give you a cheeky preview of the nominations…
I’m not going to list all of the nominations here; if you really want to see everyone that’s running for an award, see the official Oscar website. Even the website breathes glitz, glamour, success, sparkle! But what HCX will do is highlight all the main nominees from the films we have heard of and/or seen and are interested in doing well at the Academy Awards ceremony, as I’m sure all you are!
Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi and Silver Linings Playbook are all up for Best Motion Picture, for which I believe they all fully deserve. I’m slightly biased due to my obsession with musical theatre and so would love to see Les Misérables go home with the award, as I think everyone who’s seen it will agree, it was the most moving, realistic and innovative production of a stage musical I’ve ever seen.
Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook, Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln and Hugh Jackman in Les Misérables are all nominees for Actor In A Leading Role. I thought Bradley Cooper was fantastic in his weird, depressed/obsessed, bi-polar-esque role in Silver Linings Playbook, although I found the film rather depressing and didn’t catch onto the intended ‘non-conventional rom-com’ style intended by the producers. Nevertheless, the gorgeous Cooper managed to win me over, even when running dressed in black bin bags!
Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook and Naomi Watts in The Impossible are both up for Actress in A Leading Role, and although I can’t comment on Naomi Watts’ performance as I cry far too easily to even contemplate going to watch The Impossible, Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in Silver Linings was indeed impressive and note-worthy, portraying herself as a deeply disturbed young widow sex-addict (can a character get any more complicated?!).
My favourite nomination and one that I will be outraged if it doesn’t receive the award from its category is for Anne Hathaway in Les Misérables for Actress In A Supporting Role. She was absolutely sensational. I’ve read so many articles and interviews on her role in this mesmerising Hollywood adaptation of the much-loved musical, and have so much respect for this actress. Not only did she have to lose a dangerous amount of weight to play the role, but her acting throughout was the best I’ve seen in a long time; the way she connected with the songs she was singing as well as the character she was playing, and the emotions that reached the audience sitting in the cinema was so powerful and intense, if Hathaway doesn’t receive this award, await the Hollywood uproar. Or maybe just mine…
Life of Pi and Skyfall are both up for Cinematography and I think the competition between these two is fierce. Once again, Les Misérables has been nominated, this time for Costume Design, and the theme tune “Skyfall” from Skyfall, music and lyrics by Adele and Paul Epworth, is set to trump all in the Music (Original Song) category. if this isn’t in your gym playlist yet, download it now!
Every contender for this year’s Oscars is a strong one, reflecting the success of so many films from 2012, and keeping the culture of film and cinemas alive. Dame Shirley Bassey is to make her premiere Oscar appearance this year on Sunday 24 February, so get the tealights lit in your dingy student living room, prepare popcorn and snacks, and get ready to find out who has succeeded at really winning over the world with their performances on the big screen.
