It may be getting late in the month (how was christmas basically a month ago already?!), but as it’s still January, there’s still a lot of ‘new year, new me’ hype. Here at HCX, we love to make New Year’s resolutions, even if the chances of us still sticking to them in March are seriously slim. We thought we’d share with you our top beauty related aims for this year, and if you manage to stick to these too, we can guarantee you’ll thank us!

Prioritise skincare

Skincare is so important. There’s only so much that makeup can do, and if your skin is prepped to be smooth and glowy even before you apply foundation, the end result will most likely look amazing. So for 2017, there’s no excuses; no more forgetting to remove your makeup after a drunken night at Arena/Unit 1, and no more lazily removing makeup with a makeup wipe. A proper cleanse, tone, moisturise routine for morning and night will work wonders – our favourite products are the Liz Earle range, or we love The Body Shop for cheaper, but still effective, alternatives!

Wash your makeup brushes regularly

Is there a more boring chore than washing makeup brushes?! It’s probably because it’s something that we think we can get away with not doing very often. If you sit back and think about how gross it is to be putting weeks and weeks worth of old makeup and nasty bacteria back on your face everyday, it’s pretty shocking that a lot of us do it. This year, we’re going to use this chore as productive procrastination from doing uni work. Once a week, put on your choice of film/Netflix tv show on in the background, use a silicone brush cleaner like this one to make it easier and protect your hands, and voila. Your skin will be grateful, trust us.

Use SPF

Another slightly boring one as we all love to tan, but it’s a resolution that will seriously pay off in later life. Wearing SPF will help you avoid getting wrinkles and dark spots, as well as other general sun damage. UV rays are always there, so save your skin and wear it on your face everyday, even in winter or on cloudy days! The easiest way to do this is to find a moisturiser you love that has SPF included, such as Simple’s Kind to Skin Protecting Moisture Cream SPF 30.

Throw out old makeup

That lipstick you bought in Year 9 that you still have but barely wear? It’s probably time to throw it in the bin. In general, makeup in powder form, such as eyeshadows and blushers, can last for years, but liquid or cream based products have a much shorter use-by date. Any lipsticks or foundations that you’ve had ages and have a funky smell, get rid of. And then use your clear out as an excuse to buy more makeup to replace it!

Fingers crossed we can stick to our resolutions this year…
