Campus rundown: What’s Happening on Campus This Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Beginning a new year at University can be a daunting prospect. How are Freshers meant to know what’s happening on campus when they can hardly navigate their way around it? Even seasoned second, third and four years can be excused for finding the sheer amount of opportunities, and people shoving flyers in their faces every which way they turn, slightly overwhelming. HCX are here to ease the pain, and help you organise your crammed social calendar, with our select rundown of what’s occurring on campus this month.

Freshers Week:

Freshers, no matter what halls you’re in, your Welcome Team Committee are sure to be on hand to make sure you have a great Freshers Week. They will have organised a variety of events for you from BBQ’s to themed pub crawls. My advice is to do as many of these as you can; it’s a brilliant way to widen your social circle beyond your flat and meet the other people in your halls.

Other Fresher Rites Of Passage include the themed nights held at The Lemon Grove, Exeter’s student union – affectionately known as the Lemmy.  Whilst you’ll soon realise is it only really acceptable to attend the Lemmy on a Saturday night, during Freshers it’s a convenient haunt to meet new people and have some fun (usually dressed as something ridiculous). You can click here to get tickets to Fresher’s events at the Lemmy.

Now on to the Freshers events we can all enjoy…

Campus will be a hive of activity during Freshers week, and while we will do our best to give you the low down on what’s going on, the best way to get to grips with all the opportunities on offer is to actually brave the madness. Let’s be honest, if we were to list everything going on you’d stop reading wouldn’t you? To check out a full list of the Freshers week antics on campus visit the Guild website.

Interested in the media?

Look out for the mega media marquee on the 20th of September in The Ram beer garden to meet the representatives from Exeter’s student media: Xpression Fm, XTV and Expose newspaper. Xpression Fm will be holding taster sessions and outdoor broadcasts all week, while XTV are holding animation workshops and screenings.

Charity more your thing?

Then you’ll want to get acquainted with everything RAG related. Exeter Raise and Give will be hosting numerous events which include; a pool party on the 21st of September at Cornwall House Swimming Pool between 1pm -5pm, as well as their infamous pub crawl which takes place on the 17th of September. Check out more details here.

How about fashion?

Head to the forum on 17th September to chat to the Fashion society about what they do and how to get involved. While you’re there, take advantage of their mini photo booth with back-to-school themed props; you’ll also be given your photos for free!

If this is up your street then you’ll love all of Her Campus Exeter’s Freshers week plans. Look out for our Her Campus Committee in their polo shirts, accompanied by ‘studs’ and get your picture taken with them. Plus, get a free manicure on campus; choose from a range of pink, black and white shades, and take a photo of your manicure tagging HCX in it on instagram, twitter or Facebook to win prizes!

Fancy trying your hand at a new sport?

Exeter is brimming with sports… Every which way you turn there are girls in running leggings, boys brandishing their ‘lax’ sticks and enough stash to keep Kukri in business for a long time. From the classic sports such as tennis, hockey, football and cricket to canoeing, sailing and table tennis, Exeter has a huge diversity of sports on offer. Again, my best advice would be to check out the Guild website for times and locations of all the taster sessions available.

Want a break from campus?

Saturday 21st of September sees a whole host of societies from Oxfam to Flexible Combined Honours heading to the beautiful coastline that is a short train ride away from Exeter. Fancy something slightly chillier? Then join Exeter’ Snow Sports Club as they head to Exeter dry Ski slope. Enjoy a free BBQ and ski session – which will be leaving every half an hour from 12:30 at The Ram (Snow Sports home from home; you’ll be sure to find them in there throughout Freshers week, and the rest of the year for that matter).

If your action packed week has left you thinking you could see yourself getting involved in more than one society then don’t forget to head to the Fresher’s  Fair to sign up to them! You many even spot a few more societies that you hadn’t noticed before. Don’t forget to come and visit HCX’s stall. We are partnered up with 2 charities: Breast Cancer UK and Look Good Feel Better charity. £1 from each membership fee will go to charity: 50p to Breast Cancer and 50p to Look Good Feel Better. So it’s all for a good cause!

Beyond Freshers:

Just because the week long party is over, and we’ll unfortunately have to get our heads down to some work, doesn’t mean there isn’t still some exciting goings on left to be explored this month.

Wednesday 25th of September sees the return of Football varsity, an event most definitely not to be missed! Check out the details here.

If you’re all partied out, how about a trip to Exeter’s Northcott theatre? From Wednesday 25th of September to Saturday 28th September the theatre will putting on a production of ‘Educating Rita’- the classic made famous by Julie Walters and Michael Cain.

Finally, Exeter Fresh don’t forget about the Freshers ball! Okay so it’s not actually being held this month (it actually occurs in the Great hall on the 9th of October), but its close enough.

Laura is a third year English Literature student at the University of Exeter. Laura has been a member of Her Campus since 2012, when she decided it was time to actually get involved in something CV worthy. Since joining HCX Laura has been heavily involved with the Culture team writing on everything from film reviews to blogging about what to do on your day off. Having never been involved in journalism before Laura has been pleasantly surprised by how much she has enjoyed her time at HCX. This year Laura is lucky enough to be the editor of Local Culture, and is relishing the excuse to explore Exeter in search of article ideas instead of tackling her extensive reading list. When Laura isn't writing for Her Campus, or staring aimlessly at her laptop in the library hoping a first class essay will miraculously appear, she loves to socialise with friends and explore the area surrounding Exeter (especially if it involves a beach). This summer Laura will be interning at OK! Magazine in their online department, as well as gaining work experience in the press office at Arsenal Football Club. Laura will also be relaxing with friends and family and booking as many holidays as possible. After University Laura wants to pursue a career in public relations in the travel and lifestyle industries. She intends to put off becoming an adult for at least another year by embarking on the classic 'gap year' experience and travelling the world- all in the aid of her future career of course...
