“A Day Off” – Sidmouth in Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Now that spring has seemingly sprung (regardless of those bizarre snow flurries – it’s March, let’s pretend they didn’t happen) and the outdoors is feeling a little more hospitable, the coastal towns that surround Exeter are beckoning at students to come and visit. This weeks “A Day Off” HCX recommendation is such a town: the sunny seaside escape known as Sidmouth…

Just a 25 minute bus ride or car drive away, the beautiful setting of the town is certainly worth the windy roads of the journey. Sidmouth sits in the dip between two striking stretches of red Jurassic cliff, from which the views down onto the town, stony beaches and calm ocean are refreshingly beautiful.

Whilst you’re there, a top priority should be to stretch your legs and venture out along the South West coastal cliff path. The countryside and rolling cliff tops along the way will be particularly green and floral at this time of year – perfect for a romantic walk/opportunity to get snap happy with friends against the picturesque backdrop of the sparkling sea.

Having walked and worked up an appetite, for a spot of lunch try the Clock Tower Tea Rooms. Perched upon the top of a red stack of rock, the cafe flaunts the best dining views in town – their Sunday roast (with all the trimmings), tempura prawn dish, and extensive selection of freshly made cakes are just some of the delicious foods they have to offer.

If the Devon weather is up to its usual tricks and it’s looking a bit too damp for walking and view admiring, Sidmouth’s quaint little selection of shops are certainly worth a look around. The town sports numerous boutique and arty stores, the type where you’ll find yourself browsing the merchandise for hours. If you’re not too full from the culinary temptations of The Clock Tower Tea Rooms, Roly’s Fudge Pantry is not to be missed!
