“A Day Off” – Take A Trip To Topsham

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

With deadlines looming ahead and a cold front re-rearing its ugly head, the mid term blues may be manifesting for many of our readers. Day-dreaming about the summer during lectures, heading home for a weekend of comfort or how about trying this week’s A Day Off recommendation: Topsham!

This idyllic coastal village just fifteen minutes away by train enables you to leave behind the bubble of Exeter and escape for the day. The village has lots to offer, including local pubs (if you haven’t heard of the Topsham Ten what have you been doing with your life!?!), antique shops, a picturesque quay and a market on Saturday mornings.

While the little village is normally reserved by students for the summer months, in which we all cascade on the tiny settlement to watch cricket, have picnics and mainly drink, here are a few reasons to take a trip down there now
.

You could take a bike ride, or even cycle down there. With the ride being an easy flat one, head down to the quay and along the river, where you will pass the University boat club on your way into town. Then do a mini tour of the high street, stop off for some lunch or a drink and head home having spent an energetic day outdoors.

Visit Dart’s Farm, ‘A hub of local food and drink and everything you need for a cosy West Country winter!’ Here you can hire bicycles, browse the farm shops, visit the spa or most importantly EAT. With many options including a fish shed offering some of the best fish and chips in the region.

And for your cultured folk amongst us, Topsham’s antiques and art scene is enviable, with the town hall often displaying local artists’ work (think modern, colourful seaside scenes) and a huge antique warehouse by the quay. Go for a browse or pick up a bargain to proudly display in your student digs.

So whether it’s the challenge of the Topsham Ten (more like eight now!), a cultural afternoon off with the girls, or even a romantic spot for a lunchtime date, Topsham promises to be the best £2.50 you’ve spent on train fare in a long time.
