The Golden Globes 2013: And The Winner of Best Dress is….

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

So the Christmas season has been and gone, but don’t be down ladies, awards season is eager to fill its place! Less turkey and mulled wine, more champagne, awkward speeches and wardrobe malfunctions. What could be better? With the Golden Globes marking the best films of 2012, Her Campus invites you to the lesser known, but no less prestigious HCX Style Awards. So step aside Hobbit and Life of Pi fans, it’s time to see which Golden Globe outfit scooped HCX’s top prizes and who’s stylist went home empty handed.

And the winners of Best Dresses are:

Claire Danes and Jennifer Lawrence got the coral trend spot on, with these perfect gowns. So what if it clashes with the red carpet? Jessica Alba also looked stunning in orange, but Danes’ Versace number and Lawrence’s Dior dress stood out as our winners. New mum Claire Danes looked so confident and sassy; the simplicity of the dress and boldness of the colour worked perfectly together… yummy mummy indeed! Jennifer’s satin gown could well have looked too fussy, and the pleating in the skirt was a risk, but instead it beautifully emphasised her tiny waist (Yes we’re jealous!), and she looks like a princess. It’s too hard to pick a favourite, so we’ll leave it up to you. Next gong!

Lace is always a popular choice for awards ceremonies, but these two have managed to look unique, one slightly more so than the other (We’ll let you guess who.) Megan Fox looks classically beautiful in this fishtail lace gown. Her nude Dolce and Gabbana delight is far from boring: the detailing on the bodice and delicate skirt is so sophisticated and the decision to team it with pink Lorraine Schwartz earrings was colour coding genius! Critics may accuse Jennifer Lopez of looking a little, shall we say Dancing on Ice in her Zuhair Murad ensemble. So yes, it’s crazy, but then it is J-Lo. What did you expect? And HCX salutes a girl for stepping outside the box. We think she pulls it off with the muted accessories, retro hair and of course, her incredible body. The woman is 43! For sheer audacity, the winner is Jennifer.

A white gown is always a tricky one to master. Side effects include looking washed out, and god forbid, looking like a bride. Heidi Klum and Anne Hathaway wore white in very different ways, but we think the Klum comes out on top. Yes, the white and gold Alexander Vaulthier gown borders the edges of tackiness, and don’t get us started on the Jolie-esque leg, but Klum still manages to look like a goddess. Her dress and accessories give her a touch of glamour that Hathaway seems to be lacking, even in Chanel. She stole our hearts as Fantine in Les Miserables, but come on, you’re not in the 19th century anymore. You don’t need to look so virtuous. It’s just a little, dare I say, boring, and in a strange fabric that continues to perplex us. (Is it wool? Is it towelling?) Having said this, her hair looks very classy, and it’s a style that Klum couldn’t pull off. However, simply for the glitz factor, (it is the Golden Globes) the award goes to Heidi.

Best Hair & Make up

To Lucy Liu, we ask you two questions. Who did your fishtail plait, and how do we do it too?! It’s a very brave choice to go for a plait at an awards ‘do. The risk of looking like a school girl or a mermaid was high, but she manages to look like a sophisticated adult whose got it just right. We salute you. Jessica Alba’s retro curls are very Old Hollywood, and yet she makes it look modern with the coral lipstick. Also, have you seen her diamonds? That is accessorising at its finest. Gorgeous ladies. Awards for you both (Well, they deserve it!)

So who lost out?

Of course, not everyone looked as confident as J-Lo, or as elegant as Jennifer Lawrence. How could Versace get it so right with Claire Danes, and so wrong with Halle Berry? The pattern is truly horrible, and with the cut it just looks messy. Halle is blessed with the most beautiful figure, but why have your hip hanging out of all places? And Sienna Miller’s floral nightmare is just plain frumpy. Miller, a new mother as well, is overwhelmed by the Erdem creation: It’s wearing her. She looks like she’d rather be at home; she should be embracing her new curves, and not swamping them. Better luck at the Oscars ladies!

Lily Houghton is in her final year at Exeter studying English. With an unhealthy addiction to shopping, and unparalled knowledge of Exeter's retail sector, the role of Fashion and Beauty Editor seemed to be made for Lily, and her parents were thrilled she channelled her energy towards something that didn't involve spending money. Whilst her goal of bringing the catwalks of Milan and Paris to the sunny south of England may be slighty ambitious, she also hopes to banish the jeans/flip-flop trend from campus once and for all, and impose an immediate expulsion rule on anyone seen in daylight in a onesie. Contradictory to many women interested in fashion, she loves cake, her Ugg boots, and spending an afternoon immersed in an Emily Dickinson anthology. She hopes to travel America before going into the fashion industry, although she still hasn't come to terms with just how soon she will be graduating.
