Happy Birthday Cellar Door!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

It was just over a year ago that the Cellar Door opened its doors to an eager, somewhat deprived group of youths desperate for a decent underground music scene. Although previously we were lucky enough to have the Cavern to indulge our unique music tastes, for those who were craving somewhere dark, grungy, fresh and alive, the Cellar Door delivered just that.

The aim of the Cellar Door as quoted by Jam the Channel was to provide a ‘platform for underground music and art.’ Built beneath the cobbled streets of Exeter Quayside next to the scenic River Exe, there is now an opportunity to turn the bass up high and finally make some noise. With a sound system that can rival any Exeter club, hidden behind a safari jeep that has been known to harbour many a secret or two, the music that comes blasting through the two cavernous cellars will make anyone dance. The building itself is no stranger to dance music having hosted the likes of Carl Cox and Chase and Status before becoming the Cellar Door.

One of the most unique features of Cellar Door is definitely its appearance. As you enter the club from the street you become enraptured by the strange pop-art like murals that cover the blackened walls. A stair-well then comes into view which leads you into the heart of the club. With the jaeggerbombs and vodka caramels flowing, you have two options; chill in the comfy leather booths with your mates, or head straight for the UV lit dance floor where a talented, and often very handsome, young DJ is causing some serious vibrations.

If you fancy a night at the Cellar Door here’s what’s on offer:

• THICK AS THIEVES (TAT) & EXIT: two nights boasting the best in student and local DJ talent playing DnB, House, Garage, Jungle, Electro and Bass music
• JUNGLE GYM WEEKDAY WORKOUT: strictly jungle music for those born with a wild streak
• FRED V & GRAFFIX ‘GET ME’: signed to the Hospitality label these boys are guaranteed to have some very special guests
• TOXIC FRIDAYS –Rock and metal night for those who love to mosh
• RAMBUNCTIOUS SOCIAL CLUB – a night of ‘creatively curious antics’ and a ‘spring swaying dancefloor’ with DJ Hod’guez
• QUIRK (MAGIC HATSTAND) – Hats, Moustaches and Glitter – what more could you want?
• HELLAZAPOPPIN – Funk, jazz electro swing
• ON/OFF –Funky house, progressive and electro

Whatever you decide to go to, I can guarantee you will have a night of drunken fun, good music and more than a little bit of mischief!
