This week Her Campus Exeter caught up with Toby Gladwin, President of Classics Society and committee member for Society Executive.
Year: 3rd
Degree: Ancient History
Why did you decide to get so involved in Classics Society?
The society gets to present to Freshers’ as part of the department welcome talk. They seemed like a friendly, open committee and so I thought I would give it a go. I fell in love with the society at the first toga social. I met the people that have since become my closest friends here at Exeter.Â
What other societies are you part of?
Like everyone else I joined loads of societies in first year and went to everything from Poker to Game of Thrones. Then a friend founded the Real Ale society and we were Co-Presidents in Second Year so there wasn’t much time for anything else (although the saying is true – it is quite easy to organise a p*ss up in a brewery).
This year I am also on the Society Executive committee, which is meant to be in charge of all the societies, except… no one has heard of it. We get to affiliate new societies as well as give out ÂŁ20,000 in grants so hopefully we can benefit a lot of people.Â
Where can you be found in Exeter?
I am a massive craft beer fan – so I spend far too much time (and money) in the Beer Cellar near the Cathedral and Samuel Jones down at the Quay.
Finally, what advice, as a third year student, would you give to someone in their first year?
Get involved. There are so many opportunities at Exeter that it’s a waste not to do something. Whether its societies, volunteering or starting a business – there great opportunities at the university to do just about anything. You just have to go and find them!
