How To Handle Society Stress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Now that Fresher’s week is over, many of you will be wondering which societies to join if you missed out yesterday at the Freshers Fair. There’s still time left and you can still sign up to most societies via the Student Guild website! HCX has provided a few tips on how to make your decision.

1. There’s something for everyone. This may sound like a cliché, but Exeter really does have a society for just about everything. There are a whole variety of different sports to take part in as well as a range of music societies that cater to every taste. There’s even a society for the Hide and Seek enthusiast and a Harry Potter society.

2. Sports are a serious thing in Exeter. If you’re passionate about a sport or want to try something new, Exeter is sure to provide the society for you. Proudly wear your stash around campus and represent your club. Or you might just decide to join a sport for the social side of things. Sport socials are famous in Exeter for their ridiculous dress codes and their drinking capacities. And if you sign up for a sport, never forget the most important rule: remember to EG.

3. If you have a passion for music, you might be interested in joining one of Exeter’s musical societies. For singers there is a wide variety of choice from A Capella groups to the Gilbert and Sullivan society. Some musical societies are audition based and are only made up of select members so do your research before you set your heart on a society that might be competitive to get into.

4.Don’t be shy! Being new to a society can always seem daunting; you might feel like a small fish in a very big pond. But don’t be afraid to speak up, remember, you’re surrounded by people who have come together because they have the same interest as you, you’re bound to get on! If you make enough of an impact, there might even be a chance of getting yourself onto the committee next year and helping run your favourite society!

5. Getting the balance right. Don’t overstretch yourself by joining too many societies, you’ll find that it will not only become an expensive habit, but will leave you little time to truly take part of any of them (let alone giving you time for those last minute deadlines!). But try to join at least a few societies this year, it’s a great way to meet new people who share the same interests as you and expand your social sphere.

Alex is currently a Second year English student and is the 2013/14 Deputy Editor for Current Affairs at Her Campus Exeter. Being very passionate about English and in particular journalism, HerCampus is likely to take over Alex's life. But when she isn't writing, blogging or helping the HerCampus Exeter team in whatever way she can, Alex enjoys playing guitar and singing; hopefully well! She is also interested in musical theatre and can often be found humming show tunes absentmindedly. Alex hopes HerCampus will be one of her first steps in a career towards journalism.
