Madam X comes to Cavern

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Exeter may not be the largest of university towns, but it is undeniable that in the past year or so the local nightlife has exploded! No longer do we find ourselves confined to the sweet melodies of the Backstreet Boys at ‘Cheesy Tuesdays’ or the somewhat repetitive Lemmy playlist boasting the likes of Weezer and Toploader. With the launch of several brand new club nights, it no longer matters whether you’re a fan of chart music at a Thursday arena, or love to rave to Drum and Bass at the Cellar Door. There are now endless music possibilities lurking around every corner.

A night that has seriously upped its game this term is Beats and Bass every fortnight at the Cavern. Only three weeks into term the Beats and Bass boys have already seen the likes of Dusky, a duo quoted by beatport.com as having ‘“tapped into something, a universal – an essence that excites DJs and clubbers across the dance divide’. Having watched their set personally, Dusky did not disappoint, producing moving, melodic, deep house which had the room pulsing from start to finish. Their recent remix of Justin Martin’s ‘Don’t Go’ was an automatic hit.

After such an amazing start, it seemed almost impossible to recapture the magical atmosphere created by the huge crowds at the Beats and Bass launch night. However, the boys managed to maintain the hype with the colossal booking of the Manchester born Madam X, best known for her role as a BBC radio 1xtra club resident.

At only 21, Madam X is already fast becoming recognized as one of the leading names in the UK Bass music scene. Known for incorporating a wide breadth of music genres into her sets, particularly Garage, Bass and UK funky, Madam X’s sound is invigorating and will have you bouncing off the walls until the early hours. Combined with ultramodern green lasers and smoke pouring out of the sides of the stage, you cannot help but be transported to a place where any form of dancing is accepted and a little sweat is guaranteed.

What I always appreciate when going to see my favourite DJs is someone who knows how to engage the crowd. With some wild dancing behind the decks and a lot of fist pumping, it was clear that Madam X was mesmerised by the energy felt in the dark depths of Cavern. It is not often that I will dance for a solid hour without any toilet breaks or water, however for this set I would have probably fainted before leaving the dance floor. Not only did she include some classic dance anthems in the mix, but for those Pitbull lovers, she even managed to throw in the Nightcrawlers’ “Push the Feeling on”, catering for all music tastes.

With such sensational bookings, the Beats and Bass boys have not only managed to create an extremely popular night, but a unique experience in itself. Even if you shy away from drum and bass music or have not yet been exposed to other genres, I thoroughly recommend you try these nights. You never know, you might just come to love them as much as I have.
