Spring Clean your Skincare Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Spring is slowly creeping up on us (despite the snow and sub-zero temperatures) and along with bringing more colour into our attire, it’s also time to switch up our skincare routines to get our skin ready and glowing for the warmer months. So without further ado, here are HCX’s top tips on how to get your skin looking fresh for the spring:

CLEANSE

This is one vital step that stays present in our routines throughout the year. Spring comes with many events that we want our skin looking flawless for, and remembering to remove your make up after a night out is just one simple step that will go a long way in attaining incredible dewy skin.  It is safe to say that the freezing winter months left our skin dry, dull and brittle, so switching to an oil based cleanser will add that extra touch of moisture and remove every last bit of that waterproof mascara. This will have your skin bouncing back to its dewy and bright form in no time. Clinique always have our backs when it comes to skincare, and their Liquid Facial Soap is the perfect candidate for the job. They have options for both dry and oily skin and at £15 it’s a product that is definitely worth the money. The Burt’s Bees Radiance Facial Cleanser is a more affordable option which not only contains natural extracts such a jojoba oils and sugar cane extract, but is also Paraben free which means that no harmful chemicals will be absorbed into your skin.

If you want to give your skin a little extra indulgence, deep cleansing face masks always do an incredible job at removing blackheads and blemishes. HCX loves the Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Mask which is the number one selling mask in the WORLD! And we can certainly see why, its components act like magnets to remove any dirt clogging the pores and remove impurities.

EXFOLIATE

Exfoliating is a key step to attaining a fresh and glowing looking complexion for the warmer months. With graduation balls and the Enchanted Garden Ball on the horizon, a more abrasive exfoliator will really work on your skin to remove dull and dead skin cells which have built up over the winter from the cold weather, and will leave your face looking much healthier. Also, massaging a more abrasive exfoliator into the skin will increase the blood flow into your face, leaving your skin with a healthy, natural glow. Her Campus recommends the No.7 Total Renewal Micro-dermabrasion Face Exfoliator which is affordable and does an incredible job at sweeping away the dead skin cells, removing any scarring from acne and removing blackheads. And remember, exfoliation is the first step to ensuring a flawless fake tan, so see this as preparation.

MOISTURISE AND SPF

During the cold winter months, our skin lacks moisture because it doesn’t secrete as much sebum. To our dismay, this is the reason why at the moment our skin is looking dry and very dull. Using a good moisturizer every day will help to bring that moisture back into the skin and will leave it looking dewy and healthy.  Also, it’s important that after using an abrasive exfoliator that works vigorously on your skin, you use a moisturiser to rebalance the oil levels and rehydrate the skin.

A vital element that needs to be a part of our skincare routines is some form of SPF (sun protection factor). Although it is safe to say that we’re not going to be bringing out the bikinis any time soon, sun rays can still penetrate on a cloudy day and can be extremely harmful for your skin. Many foundations contain some sort of SPF, but if not, try and find a moisturiser that contains some.  Although it is pricey, the L’Occitane Ultra Moisturising Fluid is a product that’s worth the splurge! This cream contains SPF 20 which will protect your skin from the sun and will avoid any sunburn or discolouration.

So there you have it, the three easy steps to change in your skincare routine to wave goodbye to dull and dry winter skin, and say hello to radiant and healthy skin ready for spring!
