Tips For A Healthy(ish) Freshers Week!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

So we all know that fresher’s week might be a wild, fun and slightly crazy week. But unless you want your liver and immune system to die, you need to take heed of our wise words – trust us, we’ve been there!

Don’t get us wrong, if you don’t get fresher’s flu than you probably weren’t doing fresher’s right! However, if you listen to these five wise pieces of advice hopefully you will be able to remember your fresher’s week and not feel too worse for wear…

Tip 1: You don’t have to drink every night.

Like, seriously! Most of us tend to go a bit hard during Fresher’s and whilst this is all part of the fun and is a time where booze seems to be around every corner, you really do not have to drink every night. Or at least, not too hard every night. Please think of your liver. And if you do intend to go all out then make sure you stay hydrated, get some fresh air and eat well to compensate for a bit too much heavy drinking. So party hard most of the nights, but consider having a movie night with your new flatmates to compensate for all the partying. Trust us – your body, mind, and bank account will thank you!

Tip 2: Try to include some healthy habits.

No one needs to be perfect this week. You don’t need to eat ‘clean’ or miss out on socialising to spend time working out. But consider going for a few walks, getting in some kind of exercise most days and trying to eat healthily. You cannot live off only junk food and too much alcohol for a week – you will pay for it by feeling rubbish the next week. Trust us.

Tip 3: Go to those society taster sessions.

Sure, you may regret going to a free Zumba class on only two hours of sleep – but it really does help with the hangover! So maybe try going to some of the hundreds of societies’ free sessions as these will help you make friends, join societies and also leave your bed! Besides, how will you ever learn if you’re cut out to be a cheerleader or a Kung Fu guru if you don’t try them out?

Tip 4: Water.

Lots of water. Most people are dehydrated without knowing. If everyone drunk some water right now we guarantee everyone would feel more energised, need caffeine less and feel less sluggish. Do NOT ignore water. Water is your friend. Water is your best friend during this week. Water will help you function, will cure your hangover and will stop you drinking too much caffeine and becoming a demonic caffeinated zombie.

Tip 5: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself!

This is the most important! Do not worry if you eat too much Dominios. Do not worry if you counted dancing on tables as your cardio. Let go this week and have fun. Really try to engage with the wildness of freshers and spread your wings and make friends. But also don’t feel disappointed if it doesn’t live up to expectations – there are SO many more opportunities to have fun at Uni! So have fun and try to stay as healthy and fit as possible. Many people don’t have a perfect freshers week but go on to have amazing times at Uni. So don’t put pressure on yourself to have a perfect week – you will end up stressed, tired and feeling mentally drained if you do.

So go forth freshers and have a great time. Enjoy and look after yourselves!

P.S. Take in some Vit C (Oranges, Peppers etc.) because, trust us, Freshers Flu sucks! And it WILL get you! So good luck, bulk buy those tissues, and get ready.
