Top 5 Christmas Dates in Exeter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Christmas is one of the most romantic times of the year – all the Hollywood films say so! If you’re looking for a bit of romance in your life this Christmas, Her Campus is here to help. Exeter really gets into the Christmas spirit and there are plenty of opportunities to go on a Christmassy date with that special someone in your life and here are just a few of our favourite ideas:

Exeter Christmas Lights Switch-On 2014

This popular event draws in the crowds every year as the Christmas Lights Switch-On event proves to be more than just the flick of the switch. This year the ceremony is on November 20th in Princesshay Square, and will see European Athletics Championship Gold medallist Jo Pavey and actress Caroline Quentin switch on the lights, joined on stage by members of the Exeter Chiefs rugby team – a good incentive to go along even without a date! Following the switch on, there will be a variety of musical performers including the University’s own soul choir and jazz orchestra. The event runs from 4pm-8pm, with the light’s going on around 6.30pm, so get there early to find a decent spot! Standing out in the cold might seem a daunting option, but just think, it’s the perfect opportunity to snuggle up to your date.

Exeter Christmas Market

The Christmas Market is definitely one not to miss! There are plenty of stalls offering unique handmade gifts and adorable Christmas decorations. You won’t be able to resist picking up a small knick-knack as a reminder of that perfect Christmas date. If you get peckish, you and your date need not go far, the market also has a range of food stalls offering hog roasts, mince pies and a range of international delights. The Christmas Market can be found on the Cathedral green and runs from the 20th November to the 20th December.

Society Christmas Dinners

Round about now is when societies start flogging their tickets for Christmas dinners. Instead of going solo, why not ask someone special along with you? It’s probably not the best way to approach a new guy with this offer, it might seem a little keen! But if there’s someone you’ve been seeing for a while, why not show your interest and ask him along. A three-course meal in a nice restaurant where you’re both dressed up in your finest certainly beats a drink in a dark corner of the Vic.

Mulled Wine at the Firehouse

If you’re just looking for a casual date, the Firehouse never fails whether it’s with a new guy or someone you’ve been with for ages already. This time of year is when the Firehouse really feels special. The whole place is lit by candlelight, the smell of mulled wine fills the air, mistletoe hangs daintily from each barrel and eave – I mean really, how much more romantic could it get?

Christmas Clubbing

Not everybody has somebody special with whom they can share the festive period. But never fear it’s not too late to find them! Christmas themed club nights are just around the corner and the likelihood is you probably won’t need that mistletoe to find someone on the dance floor. But remember, while it might seem a cosy idea to have someone to cuddle up to this Christmas, it’s sometimes better to be single – after all, you’ll have more Christmas kisses to share around!

Whether you’re single or in a relationship this Christmas, make sure you get down to some of these Exeter events!

Being very passionate about English and in particular journalism, HerCampus is likely to take over Alex's life. But when she isn't writing, blogging or helping the HerCampus Exeter team in whatever way she can, Alex enjoys playing guitar and singing; hopefully well! She is also interested in musical theatre and can often be found humming show tunes absentmindedly. Alex hopes HerCampus will be one of her first steps in a career towards journalism.
