Top 5 Makeup Trends for A/W 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

Here at HCX we’ve been scouring the catwalks for some makeup trends to liven up your regular look this Autumn. Not only is it a much cheaper way of updating your look, these trends are classics that can take you effortlessly from day to night. From brights to berries, there’s something for everyone to try out.

One – Mulberry Lips

Seen on the models walking for Vera Wang, Miu Miu and Fendi, the mulberry lip is an autumn classic that keeps coming back every year. Best paired with minimalistic eyes and simple contouring, this look is perfect for both day and night. For a more intense look try an ombre effect, or for the more faint-hearted, try using a lip stain as a nod to this bold trend.

Two – Matte Red Lips

For those who aren’t quite brave enough to face full-on mulberry lips; take inspiration from Nina Ricci and Marni and go for a matte-red. Those with olive/yellow-toned skin should stick to orange-based shades, while those with pinker tones should use blue-based ones. If you’re darker, you’re in luck! Every shade of red should pop beautifully against your skin. Like the mulberry shades this look should use your lips as the focus point, sticking to simple eye makeup to make sure your pout stands out.

Three – Bold Brows

It seems that model-du-jour Cara Delevingne’s brows are here to stay for autumn and winter, and they’re super easy to recreate at home. Simply exaggerate your natural brow shape using a shadow or brow powder that matches your brows (don’t darken, there’s a thin line between beautifully bushy and the dreaded Scouse brow), and set by combing your eyebrows up and outwards using a brow gel or hairspray to complete the look!

Four – Bronzed Wings

The classic cat-eye is an incredibly flattering look, but this season it’s been updated a tad. Rather than using a traditional black, recreate the look using bronze eye shadows for an understatedly pretty look. Gucci teamed it with bleached brows, but don’t worry, this works just as well with your normal ones! Accessorize with a nude lip and lashings of mascara and you’re good to go! For a daytime twist, use matte instead of shimmering shadows, and blend further for a smokier effect.

Five – Big Lashes

The only accessory you’ll need to complete this doe-eyed effect is some nude lips and just a smidge of eyeliner on the upper lash line. Let your lashes take centre stage like Emilio Pucci did; adding just a touch of nude gloss and sixties-style matte skin. If you’re feeling brave, go for some lengthening falsies to really exaggerate the look, but be sure to use natural lengthening ones rather than volumizing – we’re looking for big doe eyes that would melt anyone’s heart!

Francesca is a third year BA Marketing, Management and French student at Exeter, and when she isn't busy running around campus to yet another lecture, you can find her tucked into the corner of a sofa writing her beauty and lifestyle blog; f.s.h.t . Francesca fell in love with fashion and beauty through stories of her grandmother being a model in the sixties, and ever since then she's been on a mission to try every beauty product out there, and is happy to make a mistake every now and again so you don't have to! Aside from all the extra-curricular activities (she's also the President of the Marketing Society), Francesca loves spending time in the kitchen with her friends, cooking comfort food for everyone, with a cup of tea in one hand and a wooden spoon in the other, giving her the well-deserved nickname of 'Mummy'. Although not a keen sportsman, Francesca's favourite thing in life is skiing; during her gap year she worked a season in France, where she claims she had the best few months of her life! After she leaves university, Francesca is planning a career in the PR industry, working for companies who specialise in skiing, beauty or luxury travel, so finger's crossed!
