Donald Trump ‘lewd’ video emerges

A video clip from 2005 has been released by the Washington Post in which Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, can be heard making lewd and even sexually exploitative remarks about women. In the video, an unaired clip from the TV show ‘Access Hollywood’, Trump can be heard claiming that he is “automatically attracted” to beautiful women and that he “just start[s] kissing them”. He goes onto claim that “when you’re a star they let you do it… you can do anything”. Since the release of the video Trump has come under heavy criticism with over 30 senior republicans withdrawing their support from the Republican presidential nominee. In response to the clip, former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, stated on her Facebook page, “Donald Trump should not be President. He should withdraw”.

Hurricane Matthew devastates Haiti

The category five hurricane ‘Matthew’ caused devastation as it made landfall in Haiti earlier this month. Almost 900 people are confirmed to have been killed as a result of the hurricane, with estimates suggesting that the death toll could still rise. A nurse working in the region told the BBC that there has been “large-spread destruction”, with possible ‘”90% destruction” in some areas of the south of the country. Rescue efforts have been difficult with some towns now increasingly difficult to reach by land. Charities have issued appeals for aid, with the Red Cross issuing an emergency appeal for $6.9 million. There are growing fears that the death toll could rise further due to the poor sanitation and thus the potential for a cholera outbreak, as seen after the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010.

Value of the Pound falls significantly

The value of the pound against both the euro and the dollar has dropped significantly with the pound at a three year low against the euro. The drop occurred after Prime Minister Theresa May’s statement that the UK would trigger Article 50, the official negotiations to leaving the EU, by March 2017. If the Government continue with these plans it would mean that the UK would leave the EU by mid-2019. Since the initial fall the value of the pound has recovered slightly, but since the EU referendum in total the pound has fallen 18% against the dollar, figures not seen since 1985. Neil Wilson, a markets analyst at ETX capital, told the BBC that: “the weak pound is a symptom of much deeper worries about the UK economy and Brexit”.

Will Young to leave Strictly

In entertainment news, former Exeter University student and singer Will Young has announced he will be leaving the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing for ‘personal reasons’. The departure of Young after three weeks of the show resulted in speculation on social media for the reason of his exit. The response prompted Young to send a text to Chris Evans the host of the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show stating: “it’s all very undramatic, really”. He went on to say, “I’ve done my statement and others can say what they want to say”. Fellow celebrity contestants on the show have tweeted messages of support to the singer, with model Daisy Lowe tweeting, ‘I love you dearly and hope you’re alright’.
