On April 11, members of the Class of 2015 came together to celebrate the milestone of choosing their college majors. Sophomore class president, Mark Harmon, began the night with a video that talked about this milestone, and which was produced by sophomore Film Studies majors. After a brief speech from President Daniel Porterfield, who stressed our class to continue to come together, the dinner began and chatter was underway.
Though I am a double major in Spanish and History, I chose to sit with fellow History majors. It was amazing to discuss with alumni how they used their concentration in History to further their careers. While all the alumni at my table were History majors, each one of them had a different career that ranged from teaching to working in finance. It was encouraging to hear that there are vast opportunities in the career world for those with a liberal arts degree.
Before leaving the event, past Fummer John Weaver ’82 closed with a letter to himself as a college student. The letter was light-hearted and inspiring, which encouraged sophomores to interact with the community around them, including their friends, professors, and alumni. The night closed with continuous, lively conversation as professors, alumni, and students talked more about what their majors meant to them and what the future holds. Overall, the night ended successfully and sophomores received a free portfolio to begin the second half of their journey at F&M College.
