Pros and Cons of Homecoming Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

Oh sry ru mad that we came to the party??

Con: Having to share your space with both your family and your roommate’s family…

All of us college students know the reality of dorm life. It’s teeny tiny, and its crowded enough with just you and your roommate as it is. Then during homecoming weekend you add five plus people to the mix, and truth be told it gets crazy. I live in Brooks College House, which is known to have the absolute smallest dorms on the F&M campus, and as you can imagine it gets especially cozy.

Pro: Quality family time…

It’s great to see your family for the first time since you were dropped off to college in late August, especially if you are a freshman. I haven’t stopped laughing since my younger brother arrived on campus Friday night. You never realize how much you miss someone until you see them again. Undoubtedly, homecoming weekend is the perfect opportunity for family bonding and endless laughter.

Con: Awkward interactions with guys when your parents are around…

Please stop looking at me, thank you. That’s exactly what keeps going through your mind when you are casually talking to your cute guy friends and your mother is near by and she won’t look away. Seriously… They always want to know everything, don’t they?

Pro: Going out to eat delicious meals…

It’s simple; food definitely tastes better when your parents are buying, and it’s a fact; you can only take DHall for so long before you start going low key insane. Homecoming weekend is the perfect time to enjoy as many gourmet meals with your family as possible; to take advantage of all the amazing restaurants in downtown Lancaster, because we all know come Monday, it’s back to the harsh reality of eating DHall food again.

MAJOR Con: Frats that exclude “everyone else” except the alumni…

When you and your friends are totally down to party Friday night, and only after you all get hyped and ready to go out are you informed that you actually can’t get into Phi Psi tonight, because its Alumni weekend. You are told only F&M alumni and frat brothers are allowed. Excuse me, what? I mean it’s always Phi Psi Phriday, what are you talking about? Yes, that is precisely correct, it is always Phi Psi Phriday… except when it is alumni weekend.

MAJOR Pro: It will end and we will all be getting back to business as usual…

Homecoming weekend has been fun and all, but it’s going to be great to get back into the routine. No more family stuffiness in the dorm room, no more curious parents, and no more “alumni only” frat events. Thank God. And most importantly, we can all happily and confidently get our A game flirt back on.
