It’s that time of year again, Greek Rush/Recruitment week! Starting Thursday night, January 31 and ending on Saturday night, February 2, approximately 160 girls will undergo F&M formal Panhellenic recruitment. The next week, starting from February 6 to February 8, Phi Sigma Pi will conduct its rush.
Leading up to recruitment, the girls were given a Potential New Member guidebook that would help them throughout recruitment. There was also a registration fee of $7.
Each night of recruitment is a little bit different. The first night is sort of like a meet and greet, with the women meeting the sisters of each of F&M’s four sororities: Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, and Kappa Delta. The potential new members spend about 30 minutes with each sorority, and at the end of the night, have a selection process to narrow down the field slightly. The next night is a philanthropy night, where the potential new members spend 45 minutes at each sorority they got invited back to and get to learn about the sorority’s philanthropy, with another selection process at the end of the night. The final night, preference night, the potential new members spend an hour with each sorority they got called back to, and at the end of the night, decide which sorority they would like to hopefully get a bid from. The next day, bid day, when a potential new member receives and accepts a bid, she can finally meet her new sisters and take plenty of pictures to remember her special day!
However, next week from February 6 to February 8, Phi Sigma Pi, the co-ed national honor fraternity, will be hosting rush. The minimum GPA needed for Phi Sigma Pi is a 3.0. Prior to rush, prospective brothers (all the members are called brothers, regardless of gender) are able to attend information sessions to learn about Phi Sigma Pi. The first two nights, February 6 and February 7, are an open rush for anyone who is interested and eligible to meet the brothers. After open rush on February 7, there will be a mid-rush vote by the brothers to decide whom they want for callbacks. The callbacks are there so that the prospective brothers can get to know the brothers better and so the brothers can get to know the prospective brothers better. The brothers do a final vote on February 9, and notify the prospective brothers whether or not they got a bid.
Those in Phi Sigma Pi can also be in a social fraternity or sorority along with Phi Sigma Pi. The dues for the first semester of Phi Sigma Pi are about $180 to $190, making it less expensive than many of the social fraternities or sororities.
Good luck to everyone going through recruitment and/or rush, and most of all, have a great time!
