The 2020 Olympics are 174 Days Away and We Couldn’t Be More Excited!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

The 2020 Summer Olympic Games are just around the corner as the world’s best athletes prepare to represent their countries in an effort to secure gold. This year, the Summer Olympics will be held in Japan’s capital of Tokyo making it their second time hosting. Tokyo first hosted the Summer Olympics back in 1964 but Japan has also hosted two Winter Olympics at Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998. The festivities will begin on July 24th, 2020 and will run until August 9th, 2020. This year’s Summer Olympics will prove to be better than the last as new, exciting sports are expected to debut including skateboarding (say hello to the next Tony Hawk), surfing, sport climbing, and karate.

Despite some new additions, there is one change in particular that will surely draw some attention which is the adjustment to the gymnastics team rules. Each country will now have four all-around contestants with two teammates to compete in individual events. These Games are going to be so much fun to watch and I cannot wait to see some new faces representing the United States. Also, I hope to see returning superstars like 2016 gymnastics medalist Simone Biles, swimmer Katie Ledecky, and track star Sydney McLaughlin. There’re plenty of medals to be handed out as there are around 339 different events so surely there will be at least one event your family can agree on instead of fighting over the clicker.
