Annual Student-Athlete Talent Show Raises Money for Good Cause

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

For the seventh year, Fairfield University varsity athletes displayed their abilities beyond their sport and academics in the highly anticipated campus event, the Student-Athlete Talent Show.   In Alumni Hall this past Saturday, January 28th, all twenty varsity teams participated in the competition presented by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, showing off various dance routines and skits to the Fairfield U community.  In the end, the dancing talents of the Men’s Cross Country team prevailed, as they took home first place.

In an event that brings the entire student body together, hundreds of Fairfield students filled the stands in support of their athletes—even through the second-hand embarrassment from watching competitors dance awkwardly in front of Father Doody.  Enjoyed by fans and athletes alike, the comical performances brought a fun competition to the spring semester. “It was an exciting feeling having the majority of the student body there supporting Fairfield Athletics.  I know we always have a great time every year coming out and performing,” said sophomore, Mark Soldatic of the Men’s Rowing team.

With a raffle and entry fees of $3 for students and $5 for non-students, the event’s dedication to contributing to a good cause stood firm as always.  This year, the beneficiary was Ally Stoltzmann, a Monmouth University Women’s Softball pitcher who was seriously injured in a car accident in 2015.  All proceeds from the talent show went to Ally and her family, as they continue to fight during Ally’s journey of recovery and rehabilitation. Not only did Fairfield athletics host the fundraiser, but they also wore Monmouth athletic shirts in solidarity, showing their respect for a rival MAAC competitor.

Meghan Guzewicz, a member of the Women’s Dance Team, said “The talent show is such a great fundraiser because it is truly a win for everyone; the athletes give off a contagious energy that fills the crowd, and knowing it’s all for a great cause makes it even more special, particularly when it’s for a fellow student-athlete in need.”
