Remember in middle school, when everyone would proudly sport their Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, and Hollister t-shirts? Do you also remember how unacceptable those became? Even when we learned to weed brand name tees out of our wardrobes, there were still those who insisted on wearing them. Though we have been reminded, time and again, that tees with words on them are not ok, the newest “slogan tee” trend is in full force, and this collegiette is most definitely torn.
I am not the kind of girl who dresses too flashy, or too revealing. So when it came to shirts with words on them, they were an absolute turn off. I think we can all agree that the classic, “FBI: Female Body Inspector” t-shirts are never ok. But even ones with funny sayings like, “I tried to be normal once. Worst two minutes of my life!” were never ok with me. I just always associated them with dads trying to be cool, or those who were trying too hard to be funny. Bottom line, I did not find them appealing.
Recently, however, I have noticed a trend of cute slogan tees from stores like Forever 21 and Topshop. Slogans like “tres chic” definitely caught my attention, and I even found myself checking what sizes were available. What I noticed about these slogan tees, however, is that I was more attracted to the style of the shirt than the words themselves. I found shirts with the same or similar style, and I realized I liked them more than the shirts with the slogans.
When it comes to slogan tees, I think it’s best they are kept to high school names, names of universities or teams. Lets confine our funny thoughts to twitter or, if you must, a Facebook status. Go ahead and wear your slogan tee at home or at the gym, but when it comes to dinner with friends or a truly public place, lets keep our slogan tees at home.
