Disney has introduced a new princess to Disney Junior, and this time she’s Latina.
According to People.com, Princess Elena of Avalor will be making her debut on Sofia the First in 2016.
After her introduction in Sofia the First, Elena will have her own series premiering in 2016. The series will take place in an enchanted kingdom that’s inspired by Latin cultures and folklore.
According to BBC News Entertainment and Arts, Disney described the sixteen-year-old princess in a blog post stating she’s “bold, caring, funny, and clever ascendant to the throne in the fairytale kingdom of Avalor”.
The story of Elena is connected to the amulet Sofia wears around her neck in the show. Decades ago, Elena was trying to protect her little sister Isabel but a sorceress imprisoned her inside the amulet. After being freed, Sofia helps Elena return to her homeland.
Aimee Carrero of ABC Family’s Young & Hungry, will be the voicing Elena.
