Fairfield University received a $5 million donation by an anonymous sponsor according to University President Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J. on October 3.
At the Fairfield’s Board of Trustees meeting, Father von Arx announced that the funds are to be used to renovate and expand the Leslie C. Quick Jr. Recreation Complex. The Rec-Plex is centrally located on campus and available for use to all students, faculty, and staff. Built in 1979, the Rec-Plex is an intricate part of daily life for those on campus. It contains the swimming pool utilized by the University’s Varsity swimming and diving teams, Birkenstock field house, and general fitness and weight rooms. Its presence on campus is essential to the daily lives of the student population.
Fairfield Alumnus and Trustee, John C. Meditz ‘70, donated a gift of $10 million to the University for the modernization of the Rec-Plex last April. The University has retained its 11,000 square foot two-story expansion and modernization of existing facilities. He hoped that his donation would start a trend for others to donate, and it certainly has.
These two substantial gifts bestowed upon the University will be greatly appreciated. As a regular user of the facilities, I think I can speak for all students when I say that a slight modernized revamping of the equipment and area is definitely needed.
