Modest was definitely considered hottest during a Muslim designer’s New York Fashion Week show.
Indonesian designer Anniesa Hasibuan wowed NYFW by making the innovative decision to dress all of her models in hijabs for her spring collection. While hijabs have been worn on the runway before, Hasibuan’s show was the first to include all models wearing them. This is also the first time an Indonesian designer has had her own show during NYFW.
Hasibuan’s event showcased gowns, pants, patterns, colors, and embroidery that were inspired by her hometown Jakarta, Indonesia.
Hasibuan was applauded for her iconic event on social media. With recent rises in the popularity of hijabi bloggers as well as Islamic fashion brands, headscarves are finally being seen as high fashion.
“Many believe fashion is frivolous and devoid of meaning…I believe fashion is one of the outlets in which we can start that cultural shift in today’s society to normalize hijab in America, break down stereotypes and demystify misconceptions,” wrote Melanie Elturk, CEO of popular and modest clothing line Haute Hijab, via Instagram.
