How to Tell You’re Addicted to Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Let’s face it… there are some challenges that have a way of consuming your life. Some might be with schoolwork, some with relationships or personal issues, but the most destructive of all is undoubtedly the addiction to Netflix. Netflix has a unique method of providing both an entertainment platform while also acting as an ideal outlet for distractions and procrastination. Most of us can admit we’ve been hooked on at least one series during our time at college, and have struggled with this love-hate relationship. How can you tell the difference between simple TV watching and an all-out obsession? Take a look at our guide to decipher whether or not you’re addicted to Netflix!

1. Your binge watching is affecting your social life.

2. Except for when you meet someone who is watching the same show… automatic best friends.

3. Schoolwork is always less important than finishing an episode.

4. Or for that matter, starting a new episode… because what’s another hour?

5. You think that you have real relationships with the characters.

“..oh Joey would never do that…”, “typical Ross…”, “…but would Rachel wear this?”

6. And when you can’t find a particular series on Netflix, you take it personally.

7. You have major anxiety when something interrupts your ability to watch your show of choice.

8. Netflix knows you better than you know yourself; the “suggestions” are always spot on

Is Netflix a magician? What is this sorcery!?

9. But when they’re wrong… you just laugh.

Oh Netflix, you’re crazy!

10. The word “buffering” is synonymous with mini heart attack.

11. You understand the frustration that comes with waiting for the release of the latest season.

12. You can never really watch a show with someone. There’s simply no way you can wait until you’re together to see what happens next.

Don’t let ANYONE hold you back!

13. You have, at some point, gotten kicked off of someone’s account, which forced you to get your own (or find yet another person to mooch off of).

14. You’ve seen one too many documentaries.

15. Ending a show on Netflix is comparable to failing every one of your finals, breaking up with your significant other, and the permanent discontinuation of Nutella all combined.

16. You haven’t turned on your cable television in months.

Commercials? What are those?

18. You’ve used Netflix at the gym.

19. There have been times that you’ve watched a show for so long you hardly recognize yourself when you break from your Netflix trance.

20.  Sometimes you debate stopping Netflix all together and getting motivated to be a functioning person in real life.

21. But then you think about it… why would anyone leave Netflix?
